| Race spec. for new engine |

| Last weekend at the Italian
Grand Prix BMW was to make public the existence of an engine that, for the
first time, would rev to over 19,000 rpm. This engine would help Juan Pablo
Montoya to pole position for the race. Now this engine is been prepared for
use not just in qualifying but also in the race.
It was announced on the BMW
Motorsport web site that BMW is attempting to have this qualifying engine
ready to use in the race at either the US Grand Prix in two weeks or the
final race of the season in Japan.
The team will use further time on the dyno and the track in order to race
ready this new engine. Dr Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director, said: "We will
now try to get a racing permit for these specifications."
"This means, we will now finish with the long testing and apply it in the
race. If everything goes well for the tests in the coming week, then we
might put it into use at Indy. If this is not so, then we'll apply the new
package in Japan."
In the race Ralf Schumacher would have an engine failure, a pneumatic valve
problem, but this has not discouraged the engineers at BMW. The engine that
failed was not on of the new units.
Theissen added: "After a superb qualifying, this is of course a rather
disappointing race result, no doubt. Still, Monza proved to our team in
Munich that all it had done showed great effects. I think this is a good
basis for the last two races." |
