| From reports coming from BMW
it would appear that the new BMW P83 engines development schedule is
progressing better than expected.
2002
saw WilliamsF1 have the use of the P82 BMW engine, using it to very good
effect despite the limitations of the FW24 chassis. For 2003 BMW's aim is to
again supply a powerful and reliable engine.
It is expected that the P83 engine will be more powerful, lighter, and
stable than the previous model. The new P83 engine was first tested last
September. BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger said: "This year, we are
two months earlier than at this time last year. We have already tested the
engine several times."
As for the chassis for the 2003 season Berger feels confident that
WilliamsF1 can deliver in this area. Berger added: “When it comes to the
chassis, Williams is a lot more aggressive now: no improvements on the 2002
car, but a completely new approach.”
In respect of the rule changes, especially in regard to testing Berger made
it clear that the BMW WilliamsF1 Team will not commit itself to test their
cars for only a maximum of ten days. The team will continue to test away
from the Grand Prix weekends.
Berger said: "The top teams continue using all possibilities. Only the
small, low budget teams prefer the Friday tests – but they only take place
if there are more than three teams to participate." |
