Significant improvement
from Williams in 2012
In a
teleconference after the Williams F1 team had confirmed Bruno Senna for the
2012 season Williams's Chief Operations Engineer Mark Gillan spoke to
autosport.com of how he felt that the team is confident of making
significant progress in 2012 after their extremely disappointing 2011
season..
Gillan said: "Obviously it will be a quite a significant improvement in
performance but that is our goal and I am reasonably confident looking
forward that we will achieve that goal.
"We want to be consistently in the top ten, going through to Q3 and
consistently scoring points. I am confident we can achieve that goal."
Gillan also spoke of the changes that the Williams team has made in
particular how they have made sure that the 2011 errors are not repeated in
2012.
He added: "The overall development of the car is going well and on plan. The
car build has started and the processes has dramatically changed from last
season to make sure we capture faults along the way as quickly as possible
and not have as many issues as last season.
"Generally, the performance trend looks encouraging and the processes on the
design side have dramatically changed."
As for the 2012 Williams driver line-up, which will see two relatively
inexperienced drivers behind the wheel of the FW34 Gillan sees this as an
opportunity rather than a problem for the team.
"It obviously puts added pressure on the operations side, but to me it is an
opportunity," he said. "We have three reasonably inexperienced drivers but
three with great potential and it is up to us as a team and the drivers to
effectively unlock that potential throughout the season and maximise the
performance."
Hopefully we're nearer the points race in and race out. I don't doubt that the crew are working flat out to achieve that, so kudos and good luck!
I'm starting to get anxious. I've always loved launches and the first days of testing. They've been more exiting than most races towards the end of the season, where you pretty much know where Williams will end up.
