Quite a way to go

The BMW WilliaqmsF1 team has had the services of Juan Pablo Montoya for two seasons, and in that time he has established a reputation as been a fast and talented driver who is quite capable of winning Grand Prix.

Juan Pablo MontoyaBut for Patrick Head, WilliamsF1 Technical Director, even though he does acknowledge that Juan Pablo has the talent to achieve it he feels that Juan Pablo has a long way to go before he can achieve the title of Formula One world champion.

For Head Juan Pablo has immense talent but their is the possibility that it could be wasted if he does not apply himself to the task. Even Frank Williams has commented in the past on how he feels that Michael Schumacher is way above the other drivers in terms of his commitment.

Head said: “I think Juan has enormous talent, but I think he's got quite a way to go to be at a level where he could win a championship. That's not something I think he understands, though. I'm sure we'll be having some friendly and open talks over the winter with him, because Juan has immense talent and I think it would be very sad if it got wasted.

But, unless he can apply his very good level of intellect appropriately, he won't achieve the results that I think he should do and is capable of. Between us, we have got to work this out."

Whether Juan Pablo and Head can achieve the focus necessary to achieve a championship victory is yet to be seen but come the opening race in Australia in March 2003 Juan Pablo must be in a position to attack right form the start of the season if he has any hope of success.
