Mugello Test
02:05:2012 Day Two
Driver: Bruno
Senna
Chassis / engine: FW34-01 / RS27-5341/1
Location: Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, Italy 5.245km
Objectives: Aero evaluations and long runs
Weather: Dry and sunny
Ambient & track temps: 23ºC / 37ºC
The second day
of the Williams F1 teams Mugello test would see Bruno Senna take over from
Valtteri Bottas. The day would be an improvement over the first day. The
track was damp in the morning requiring the use of intermediate tyres for
the early installation laps. The team would be continuing with aero
evaluation runs in the morning. Both Valtteri and Pastor Maldonado were also
present at the track as Bruno started the morning runs. His first series of
runs would see him complete some slow laps prior to returning to his pit. It
would not be until another forty five minutes that Bruno would return to the
track.
He would complete three laps with a best time of 1m:26.127. At this time
Lotus driver Grosjean would set the quickest time with a 1m:21.603. Bruno
would pit returning shortly after. He would complete one slow laps prior to
pitting followed by another three lap run. He had completed twenty six laps
at this time. Again after a short break the would complete a five lap run
with a best time of 1m:25.506. After approximately thirty minutes he would
return to the track to complete a further five laps with a best time of
1m:25.221. This would be his quickest time of the morning.
After a lunch break Bruno would return to the track for more aero runs. His
first run was five laps with his times ranging from the mid 1m:27s to the
mid 1m:25s. Bruno would complete another series of four to five laps runs.
His time would be in the 1m:25s and 1m:26s. Late in the day Bruno had
completed seventy three laps. He had not improved on his morning time. His
last run would be a longer one while at the front it would be Vettel and
Webber behind Grosjean in the times. Of the drivers who Despite this
improvement he would still be slowest. had set times Bruno was slowest. On
his seventy ninth lap Bruno would set a new quickest time with a 1m:24.842.
After setting this time Bruno would pit.
Senna ended the
day slowest more than three seconds behind Grosjean's quickest time for
Lotus. However, Bruno put the time down to "boring" development work, rather
than an actual lack of pace.
"It was a long day," he said. "We tried a million parts in the car, and all
of these parts needed validation, so we tried exactly the same thing, with
procedures.
"The morning was very boring, but it was important to get it out of the way,
and fortunately the day was good in terms of weather so we got some good
information.
"You always want to be in the top part of the times, but you don't know what
everyone else is doing in the field, and this is a track that if you take
some fuel out of the car, the lap-time comes big time. It was more important
for us to know where we are than do a lap-time."
Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: We had an extremely busy second day
with Bruno completing almost our entire scheduled test programme. We
evaluated a detailed aero and mechanical test matrix and have learnt a great
deal. The forecast for tomorrow looks fine and we are looking forward to
another productive day.
Bruno Senna: It was a good day for us which we completed without incident.
We gained a lot of information from our runs and have some good knowledge to
carry forward into tomorrow. We aim to continue improving and to be
competitive on the final day. Mugello is an awesome track. It’s really fast
and physically challenging.
The Williams F1 Team will be back on track tomorrow, Thursday 3 May, with
Pastor Maldonado driving the FW34 for the final day of the test.
