The Belgian Grand Prix turned into a frustrating race for the Williams F1 Team. After demonstrating impressive one-lap pace around Spa-Francorchamps in qualifying, the team came away from the weekend without scoring points. Chief Operations Engineer Mark Gillan gives us his thoughts.

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer:

Q: How would you sum up the competitiveness of the Williams-Renault FW34 at Spa-Francorchamps?
MG: Our race pace on Sunday was not as good as we would have liked and we need to investigate this a bit further, but Pastor's qualifying was excellent. Unfortunately Bruno's qualifying was hampered by a spin and a subsequent aerodynamic loss on the next run as a result of a damaged front wing.

Q: How did the wet weather on Friday compromise the team's preparations for the dry race?
MG: With both Friday sessions being fully wet we effectively had to squeeze three sessions work into one which made for a very busy one hour period during FP3. However it was the same for everyone and we were pleased with what we achieved in preparing the cars for both the qualifying and race.

Q: Given that Pastor was 11th fastest in FP3, were you surprised by his 3rd fastest time in qualifying?
MG: We were very pleased with Pastor's qualifying and he drove exceptionally well, pushing the car to the limit.

Q: Pastor jumped the start. Was there a technical glitch that resulted in him moving before the lights went out?
MG: Pastor jumped the start as his fingers slipped from the clutch paddle by mistake.

Q: A puncture forced Bruno to pit for new tyres five laps from the flag. Have you discovered the cause of the puncture?
MG: This was a very good call by his engineering team who noticed the tyre deflation very quickly in the telemetry data and we were able to get Bruno back to the pits without further damaging the car for a change to new tyres. The rear right tyre had a number of cuts on it, which was likely to have been the result of earlier contact.

Q: Bruno set the fastest lap of the race. What positives can be taken from his race?
MG: The weekend promised a lot so to come away with no points is disappointing. I am proud of the effort that the whole team has put in over this difficult weekend and whilst we ultimately didn't score points we have learnt a lot and should therefore be stronger in Monza as a result of this.

Q: The Italian Grand Prix comes next. What can we expect from the FW34 there?
MG: We are aiming to get both cars home in the points and provided we have a trouble free weekend there are no reasons why this cannot be achieved.

If it was only a damaged front wing, it certainly was solved before the race.
So if there was not any aerodynamics problem, it was quite poor showing from Bruno. He was on a comparable level to both Toro Rossos and di Resta with failed KERS. If not first lap crash, he would have never been in course for some points in the car that could qualified 3rd.

I feel sorry for Mark that he has to explain while drivers failed to deliver race after race.

Both Toro Rossos and Diresta were on a 2 stop strategy.
Bruno was 1 stopping... Pace explained.
Bruno did well given the situation he found himself in on Sunday.

I wish they would allow Mark to tell us the truth, we all know what he would say , just want to hear it from the team.
Woefull performance yet again by both drivers.
If we had 2 top drivers in the 34 we would be challenging for both championships this season.

No, he didn't do well. He was 8th after 1st lap accident and he didn't finish in points while all Maldonado, Alonso, Hamilton, Grosjean, Perez, Kobayashi were out of the chase for points and Rosberg was struggling.

I'm not going to agree that this car needs perfect strategy to beat Toro Rosso. Bruno didn't capitalise the advantage of having 1 stop less because he was too slow. Damn, drivers who have finished the race 1st and 2nd were also on one stop strategy, so it wasn't the strategy which was ruining driver's races if the pace was good enough. Senna's pace wasn't good enough. That's it.

And another thing is that if he could overtake Toro Rossos during his 1st stint, there would be no need of going for 1 stop strategy. They wen't for it because Senna was too slow to gaining the positions on track.

Thats incorrect senna was faster than di resta and he finished 1 sec behind ricchardo and 4 sec behind vergne so senna could be 8 with a 2 stopper he had the top speed to overtake

if u look at f1mw.pl u can see his pace was better than 1 of the torro rosso s and di resta

Man, I always look at f1wm.pl because it was my first F1 site I was registered. smiling smiley

Why didn't he overtake Vergne during first 12 laps then?

No he wasn't:
To lap 10 they were doing very comparable times.
Then di Resta pitted and was doing better times.
Then Senna pitted and did 2 laps faster than di Resta, but between laps 20-26 di Resta had slighty better pace than Senna despite older tyres!
Then di Resta pitted and had comfortably better pace than Senna.
Senna pitted at the end of the race and was the fastest man on the track as he had by far fresher tyres than anyone else.

He simply was slow and had no confidence to even try to overtake on the first stint, that was@#$%&in therms of pace.

I cannot understand that people insist in saying that Senna's pace is good on this race and good on that race and that he needs to improve in qualifying and he will do OK. Bullshit, if he improves his qualifying performance and race with this pace the only results will be eventual 7, 8 places as he is been doing all this season.

He is simply not up to the car, simply as that. Maldonado does have the speed but is brainless. Senna doesn't have the speed, period.

What a season...

I always like to work out what the championship table would look like in old money to get some perspective. Last year Williams scored 0 points, this year it's;

Mercedes - 24pts
Sauber - 17pts
Williams- 11pts
Force India- 6pts

Maldonado 10 pts
Senna 1 pt

Wins are relatively less well rewarded than they used to be, as Force India would be behind Williams using the old points system. It also shows how insignificant Senna and Maldonado's efforts have amounted to other than the race win. 1 point in the rain. We get excited about 7th and 8th nowadays, but in the 1980's and 90's that wasn't worth turning up for.
