| Berger changes his mind |

| It was
previously reported that BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger had
indicated that he would be keen to stay with BMW, beyond the end of his
current contract, if the company decided to build their own Formula One car
rather than simply been an engine supplier.
His
original comments were :"If BMW decides to build its own Formula One car
that would of course be a brilliant challenge and I would sit straight down
to negotiate with BMW. We have already built the best F1 engine and so our
job is 90% done. That would mean a challenge is lacking."
Now it seems that Berger reversed his position and is urging BMW to remain
as an engine supplier to WilliamsF1 beyond their present contract which
expires at the end of the 2004 season.
In an interview for the British Autosport magazine Berger was quoted as
saying: "To build up our own car or a team would be very challenging, but
that would not necessarily be the best solution for BMW.
"For BMW it looks at the
moment that Williams is a very good partner and I personally think a
continuation with Williams is the best way forward."
BMW's board is due to decide in the next weeks to decide on its long-term F1
strategy, and is considering options including building its own car. Even
though Berger is supporting the continuation of the partnership with
WilliamsF1 it is yet to be seen whether he will be part of this relationship
or leave BMW to follow other interests. |
