Italian GP: Frustrating qualifying for Williams F1

September 7 2013

Qualifying for the 2013 Italian GP would see both Williams F1 drivers finish well down the times with Pastor Maldonado 15th and Valtteri Bottas 18th. Despite their encouraging performance in the final practice they again struggled. Sunday's race is again going to be one of strategy and a large amount of good fortune to see them secure a points scoring finish.

In the final practice session leading up to qualifying Williams F1 drivers Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas would finish in ninth and fifteenth. Both drivers had been inside the top ten prior to the final qualifying simulations so their prospects for qualifying were looking promising. It was again sunny for the start of the hour long session as the first cars took to the track for the opening twenty minute period.
After his issues in the final practice Rosberg would take to the track very early looking to make up for lost time. The Caterham and Marussia cars were out on the medium tyre while the others felt that had enough pace on the hard tyre. Pastor would be first out for Williams followed shortly after by Valtteri.

A 1m:27.562 from Rosberg as Gutierrez went fastest with a 1m:26.293. We now had both Ferrari's on the track along with the cars from Torro Rosso and Force India. Van der Gar was now second, 1m:27.207, as Rosberg went fastest with a 1m:25.276. Hulkenberg was now second followed by his team-mate. Vergne was now fastest with
a 1m:25.261. Both Williams cars were out on the hard tyre as Alonso went fastest with a time of 1m:24.938. Vergne was now second from Rosberg and Massa. Pastor was din seventh with a 1m:25.673 while we only had Vettel yet to come out with thirteen minutes remaining. Valtteri was now sixth with a 1m:25.447 which is
considerably quicker than his practice time.

Pastor was now down in ninth as Vergne improved with a 1m:24.630 to again be quickest. Ricciardo would improve to be third followed by Raikkonen, Grosjean, Rosberg, and Webber seventh. Massa would improve to be fourth with Valtteri now tenth and Pastor improving to be seventh with a 1m:25.228. Several drivers would
pit after their first runs including both Torro Rosso's. Hamilton would jump up to third with a 1m:24.826 seeing Pastor drop to tenth and Valtteri fourteenth. Vettel was now out on the track running on the hard tyre. As other drivers improved Pastor would drop to twelfth while at the front Vergne was still quickest from Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Massa, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Webber, and Grosjean in tenth.

Button would improve to be third, 1m:24.780, while Perez was sixth. Both Pastor and Valtteri had pitted with it likely that they would come back out on the medium tyre. Vettel's first lap would see him third with a time of 1m:24.697. Pastor and Valtteri were now fourteenth and fifteenth as Hamilton went fastest with a 1m:24.589 but Vettel would find a few tenths setting a 1m:24.319 to go fastest. Both Williams drivers would return to the track running on the medium tyre. There were only six drivers still in the pits as Valtteri dropped to eighteenth and Pastor sixteenth. Sutil would move up to thirteenth as Grosjean improved to be sixth, 1m:24.737. With a minute remaining Valtteri was not able to improve as Rosberg moved up to second, 1m:24.527. Perez was now fifth as the period came to an end. Both Williams drivers would start their final laps and Pastor would find time to move into twelfth with a 1m:24.905 but Valtteri could not match his team-mate seeing him out of qualifying.

So Vettel was fastest from Rosberg, Hamilton, Vergne, Perez, Ricciardo, Alonso, Grosjean, Button, Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Pastor, Webber, Massa, Di Resta, and Sutil. Those not making the cut were Gutierrez, Valtteri, Van der Gar, Pic, Bianchi, and Chilton. Encouraging to see Pastor finish twelfth but a disappointment fort the team to fail to get past the first period.

With the start of the second period Pastor would come out early joining the Torro Rosso cars and Di Resta and Hulkenberg. They were all on the medium tyre as other drivers took to the track including both Lotus cars and Hamilton. A 1m:24.746 from Ricciardo with Di Resta second with a 1m:25.077. Vergne was third as both Ferrari's came out. A 1m:29.540 from Pastor which was a very slow lap. Ricciardo would pit with Hulkenberg now second, 1m:24.846. Pastor would improve with a 1m:25.169 but would remain fifth. Vergne was third followed by Raikkonen, Di Resta, and Pastor now sixth. Alonso was on a quick lap going fastest in sector one and two but we would see Alonso go fastest with a 1m:24.227 followed by Massa with a time of 1m:24.705.

Hamilton had ran wide at the exit of the Parabolica taking to the gravel. Pastor had pitted currently in tenth. Rosberg would move into second with a 1m:24.538. Sutil was now eighth seeing Pastor drop to eleventh. Hamilton was in twelfth and Button thirteenth with six minutes remaining. Button would improve to be eighth, 1m:24.937, while team-mate Perez was eleventh. Pastor was now in thirteenth as the Red Bull cars started their first timed laps running on the medium tyre. We would have both Torro Rosso's return to the track joined by Hulkenberg and Pastor. More drivers were back out as Webber went fastest in sector two. Several other drivers were on quicker laps including Ricciardo. Webber would set a 1m:24.263 to be second with Ricciardo now third with a 1m:24.520. But Vettel would put everyone in their place with a 1m:23.977 to be fastest.

Pastor was now fifteenth with under a minute and a half remaining. Only Alonso remained in his pit as Rosberg went fourth with a time of 1m:24.393. Hamilton was now tenth, 1m:24.803 as Pastor started a quicker lap finishing in twelfth as the period came to an end. Ricciardo was fourth with a time of 1m:24.290 with Hulkenberg now fifth. Pastor had dropped to fifteenth while neither Lotus would make it in the final period with Raikkonen eleventh and Grosjean thirteenth. So the top ten was Vettel from Alonso, Webber, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Massa, Button, Vergne, and Perez. Those not making the cut were Raikkonen, Hamilton, Grosjean, Sutil, Pastor and Di Resta. A disappointing if not unsurprising result to see Pastor not make it in the final period with Pastor failing to match his medium tyre time from the first period.

Maldonado

With the start of the final ten minute period it would be Rosberg out first followed by Webber and Button. Rosberg and Webber would start their timed laps and Rosberg would set a 1m:28.332 on a poor lap while Webber would set a 1m:23.990 to go fastest. There were six drivers still in their pits looking to do only a single run. Alonso would go second, 1m:24.419, and Massa third but Vettel would again take his place at the top of the times with a 1m:23.859. Ricciardo would take to the track while Button, Vergne, Perez and Hulkenberg had yet to come out.

Rosberg would leave the pit lane fro his second run as Ricciardo started his timed lap. he would finish with a 1m:24.538 to be fourth as both McLaren's came out for their only run. All ten drivers were out with two minutes remaining as Vettel went fastest in the first sector while Webber would finish his lap setting a 1m:23.968 to be second. Massa was now third but Hulkenberg would take this spot with a 1m:24.065. But Vettel would finish his lap setting a 1m:23.755 to go fastest. Alonso was down in fifth followed by Rosberg, Ricciardo, Perez, Button, and Vergne tenth.

Another frustrating qualifying for the Williams team with Pastor and Valtteri finishing in fifteenth and eighteenth. Sunday's race is again going to be one of strategy and a large amount of good fortune to see them secure a points scoring finish.
