Canadian GP: Both Williams drivers in top ten in FP2
By Andrew Hooper
June 7 2014
The second Friday practice for the 2014 Canadian GP would see a strong result for the Williams Martini team with both drivers finishing in the top ten. Felipe Massa was able to put his previous technical issues behind him and finish in 6th while team-mate Valtteri Bottas was 7th. A very positive start to the weekend for the Williams team.
Canadian GP Friday 2nd
Practice
After the opening Friday
practice session which would see Williams Martini drivers Valtteri Bottas
finish fifth and team-mate Felipe Massa seventeenth. It was a difficult
session for Felipe having suffered an engine related issue which only saw
him complete a handful of laps. But the team would have his car repaired for
the start of the second Friday session which despite a hint of rain would be
run under dry
conditions. With the start of the session both Williams drivers would take
to the track early with Valtteri setting a quickest time, 1m:18.249, with
Felipe in second. But Felipe would jump up to first with a 1m:18.032 but it
was very early in the session. Valtteri would drop the order but would put
in a quicker lap time moving back up to be quickest with a 1m:17.879. Felipe
was second 0.153 behind his team-mate.
But Magnussen would go fastest but Valtteri would return to the top with a
1m:17.597. Hamilton would move into second and shortly after Rosberg would
go fastest with a 1m:16.892 having been second. So we had two Mercedes
followed by two Williams after fifteen minutes of the session. Rosberg would
lower his quickest
time with a 1m:16.777. Alonso would move into third with Hamilton taking the
top spot shortly after with a 1m:16.692. So with just under a half hour
completed Valtteri and Felipe were fifth and sixth. The soft tyre was been
used with no one coming out on the supersoft tyre. But shortly after the red
marked tyres would start to be see with Grosjean first out. Both Mercedes
cars would come out seeing Hamilton ultimately going quickest with a
1m:16.188. Valtteri was now up to third but Felipe would take this spot by
0.011 seconds.
Alonso was able to move ahead of Felipe but was half a second off the
Mercedes pair. With an hour of the session completed Felipe and Valtteri
were still in the top ten, fifth and sixth, while at the front it was
Hamilton from Rosberg, Raikkonen and Alonso. Behind the Williams drivers
were the McLaren's with Magnussen seventh and Button eighth. Vettel was able
to improve to be sixth and on the next lap third. With Vettel moving up the
order the Williams drivers would drop to sixth and seventh but encouragingly
they both were well within one second of the leader. After the end of the
session Valtteri would comment on the possibility of a win in Sunday's race
by saying "You always try. But I think Mercedes are too quick. You never
know what might happen in the race, but I don't think we have the pace to
achieve it. We know after Mercedes there are a few teams that are really
close and we are in that group. It's going to be a close fight."
For the Williams team both drivers would complete longer runs late in the
session prior to practicing pit stops at the end. Valtteri and Felipe had
shared the work with Valtteri running on the super soft tyre while Felipe
was out on the soft in order to gain that extra data from the session. For
both drivers the day would end on a positive note with both being well
inside the top ten.
