Russian GP: Bottas 8th in delayed FP1

October 9 2015

In a session that was delayed from half and hour Williams Martini driver Valtteri Bottas would finish 8th while team-mate Felipe Massa was twelfth. The session was delayed due to a fuel spillage on the track that saw drivers running on wet tyres while the track dried out. Both Williams drivers had run on wet tyres for their first runs but would switch to the soft as they worked through their programme.

Team Summary:
The opening Friday practice for the 2015 Russian GP would see the session delayed and race control deciding that the session would not be extended following a 30-minute delay> The delay was as a "significant" diesel spillage. This would see it be just one hour and the tyres usually allocated for the first half hour may no longer be used. For the Williams Martini team both Felipe Massa and Valtteri would take to the track using wet tyres for their installation laps. The first time would be set by Alonso with a 1m:53.854 using the soft tyre. Despite the best efforts of the organisers the track was still very slippery at the point the fuel was spilt.

Ericcson would set a 1m:57.142 on what was a very difficult track. More drivers started to come out for dry tyre runs starting with Button. Others continued to run on intermediate tyres as they waited for the track to improve with both Lotus cars coming out. A 1m:55.781 from Button. The quickest time in FP1 in 2014 was 1m:42.311 showing just how slow the track was. But there was now the possibility
of rain with a few drops of rain appearing. A 1m:50.920 from Button as Valtteri went second. Alonso would go second with a 1m:51.036 followed by Valtteri and Felipe. More drivers were out as Alonso went quickest with a 1m:49.240 with Felipe now second. Sainz would go fastest but Valtteri would move ahead. Perez and Hulkenberg were now second and third.

A 1m:47.443 from Alonso seeing Valtteri now second and Felipe ninth. A 1m:45.987 from Hulkenberg while Valtteri was second. Alonso was now third followed by Vettel, with Felipe now fifth. Rosberg was now second, 1m:46.411 with Valtteri third. A 1m:45.491 from Vettel to be quickest. Valtteri was now forth and Felipe back down to ninth with five minutes remaining. It was constantly changing in the times with Felipe now eleventh. Hamilton was now second with a 1m:45.691 with Valtteri dropping to sixth as Vettel set a 1m:44.986 to improve his quickest time. With the end of the session Rosberg would go quickest with a 1m:44.407 but Hulkenberg would move ahead with a 1m:44.355. The order would be Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Vettel, Perez, Ricciardo, Sainz, Hamilton, Valtteri, Verstappen, and Raikkonen in tenth. Felipe was down in twelfth.

Felipe Massa:
Like Valtteri Felipe would also come out on wet tyres and complete just one lap. Felipe would be the last driver to take to the track. Felipe was told to be careful on returning to the pit lane as the entry was very slippery. Felipe would follow Valtteri out for a dry soft tyre run. Felipe would set a 1m:52.205 to be fourth dropping to fifth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:50.345 to be second. But gains from others would push him down to fifth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:50.240 but was now only ninth. Felipe would set a 1m:48.460 to be fifth dropping to seventh and then eleventh. Felipe would go off at Turn eight spinning at the exit of the corner but was able to continue. Felipe's time was a 1m:46.333.

Valtteri Bottas:
Valtteri would take to the track running on wet tyres rather than a slick tyre while they had to use the part of the track where the spill occurred. Valtteri would be the first to return running on the soft tyre. His first time was a 1m:51.946 but on his next lap he would go quickest in sector one. Valtteri would finish with a 1m:49.296 to be second. His next lap was a 1m:47.959 to be quickest. Valtteri would set a 1m:47.076 but this would see him only second. As the track went quicker Valtteri
would drop to sixth. He would improve with a 1m:45.746 but with the end of the session was eighth. Valtteri said that it was pretty consistent with tyres.
