Team Summary:
The opening Friday practice for the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would see several teams running with the halo. The drivers had the soft, supersoft, and ultrasoft tyre to use over the weekend. The two Force India cars had run on the ultrasoft tyre for their installation laps. Neither of the Mercedes cars had come out with ten minutes of the session completed. But Rosberg would leave the pit lane running on the ultrasoft tyre. For Williams 2017 driver Lance Stroll was on the team pit wall. Hamilton was also out on the ultrasoft tyre. Rosberg would set a 1m:43.873 to be quickest as a few other cars came out. Hamilton would set a 1m:44.133 to be 0.260 behind Rosberg. Celis in the Force India was third

Rosberg would improve with a 1m:43.243 as Hamilton started a quick lap but he would slow in the middle sector. After their first runs the Williams drivers were fifth and seventh. Vettel and Raikkonen were third and fourth. Rosberg would go quickest in sector one but would slow over the rest of his lap. Grosjean was sixth on the supersoft with Sainz eighth on the soft. Rosberg was now 0.890 ahead of Hamilton as Ricciardo went third but was 1.1 seconds behind Hamilton. Verstappen was now third running on the soft while Hamilton went quickest with a 1m:43.051. Raikkonen was now fourth followed by Ricciardo, Vettel, Grosjean, and the Williams pair eighth and ninth. Ricciardo would move into fourth with the two Ferrari's fifth and sixth. The Williams drivers would drop to ninth and tenth as Perez went seventh. The track would empty with forty minutes of the session completed with the teams having to return this set of Pirelli tyres.

Alonso had yet to set a time and would be the first back out. Both Mercedes cars were out on the soft tyre as the Williams pair dropped to tenth and eleventh. Perez was now sixth running on the supersoft tyre. Ricciardo would improve running on the soft tyre but would remain fourth. Thirty minutes remaining and the Williams pair were seventh and twelfth. Hamilton would go quickest in sector two running on the soft tyre. He would set a 1m:42.869 to improve his lead over Rosberg to 0.374s. Twenty minutes remaining and the track was quite empty as Rosberg came back out on used soft tyres but would pit after a single lap. Ericsson was now ninth running on the supersoft tyre with his team-mate Nasr twelfth. As the session ended the order was Hamilton, Rosberg, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Vettel, Perez, Raikkonen, Sainz, Felipe, and Ericsson tenth. Both Williams drivers had complete long runs on the soft tyre with this tyre the only one used during the session.

Valtteri Bottas:
Valtteri would come out first for the Williams team running on the soft tyre. He would complete two laps prior pitting. Valtteri would return to the track on a new set of soft tyres. Valtteri would set a 1m:46.359 to be sixth, dropping to seventh. This would become ninth as the Hass cars went ahead of him. Valtteri would improve with a 1m:46.002 to be eighth. Valtteri would pit currently ninth having completed eleven laps. Valtteri would return remaining on the soft tyre with a new set going on his car. He was currently tenth but would drop to twelfth. Valtteri would pit after a short run on the soft tyre. After a short stop he would return running on the used soft tyres. Valtteri had dropped to fifth as other drivers went out on the supersoft tyre. Valtteri's time was a 1m:45.940 as he continued to circulate the track. He would tell his engineer that his car was bad under braking.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would follow his team-mate out also using the soft tyre for his installation lap. Felipe would also come back out on a new set of soft tyres. Felipe would set a 1m:46.189 to be fifth. He would drop to sixth as he continued his run on the soft tyre. He would drop to ninth behind his team-mate. Felipe would have a spin at the hairpin but was able to continue. Felipe would pit having complete ten laps. A short time after his team-mate Felipe would come out also on a new set of soft tyres. Felipe was able to improve setting a 1m:45.039 to be seventh. He would drop to eight as he pitted. He would follow Valtteri back out continuing his run on used soft tyres. He would drop to ninth behind Sainz who was on the supersoft tyre. Felipe would pit briefly returning to the track.
