The opening Friday practice session for the 2017 British GP would be an eventful one for the Williams Martini team with both drivers suffering issues with their cars that would see in the case of Lance Stroll the floor to be removed. For Felipe Massa he would run over the kerbs damaging the underneath of his car. Both cars would be repaired and with the end of the session Felipe would finish in 9th while Lance was 15th. Both drivers would focus on the soft tyre for the session but in Felipe's case many of those in front of him were on the super soft tyre.
Williams
Martini British GP Friday 1st Practice
Team Summary:
In what is the Williams Martini teams home race the opening practice for the
2017 British Grand Prix would get underway. Vettel would be the first out
running the new aero screen. It would be close to twenty minutes into the
session that the first cars would return to the track. Raikkonen was out on
the super soft tyre and would set a 1m:32.533 to go quickest, followed now
by Verstappen. Ricciardo would go quickest with a 1m:32.389 but Verstappen
would jump ahead with a 1m:31.711. Just as quickly Raikkonen would again go
quickest with a 1m:31.305.
The track was now quite busy with Verstappen again quickest with a
1m:30.957, followed by Raikkonen and Ricciardo. After their first runs the
Williams drivers were eleventh and thirteenth. At the front Bottas would go
quickest with a 1m:30.6788 with Vettel now fourth. Hamilton would go
quickest with a 1m:30.442 followed by Bottas and Verstappen. Bottas would
also improve with a 1m:29.876 but Hamilton would respond with a 1m:29.797.
Ricciardo was now third and Verstappen fourth. Bottas would again improve
with a 1m:29.651 as the Mercedes pair swapped quickest times. Verstappen
would move up to third
The track was again empty with fifty minutes remaining. Forty minutes
remaining and there would only be one car on the track. But others would
return including Felipe ands both Mercedes cars. Bottas would improve with a
1m:29.106 and an improved 1m:29.485 from Hamilton. On the super soft tyre
Vettel would improve to be fourth. Thirty minutes remaining and the Williams
drivers were eleventh and sixteenth. More drivers were changing to the super
soft tyre including both Ferrari's and Red Bull cars. Verstappen would go
third with a 1m:29.786. Fifteen minutes remaining and the top ten was
Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Vettel, Alonso, Felipe,
Vandoorne, and Sainz tenth.
Kvyat would improve to be seventh as the final five minutes of the session
commenced. With practice starts been allowed on the grid the track was very
busy as the session came to an end. Only Ricciardo was still in the pits as
the session ended. With the end of the session Felipe and Lance were ninth
and fifteenth in what was a somewhat eventful session for both Williams
drivers with repairs having to be carried out on both Williams cars.
Felipe Massa:
Felipe would be first out for the Williams team running on the medium tyre.
Felipe would complete two installation lap prior to pitting. Felipe would be
back out this time running on the soft tyre with twenty minutes into the
session. Felipe would set a 1m:32.832 to be third. He would drop to fourth
but he would have a moment at Copse running wide looking to have removed
parts off the underside of his car. Felipe would pit to have his car
checked. While in his pit Felipe would drop to twelfth. His mechanics would
replace the broken or missing barge board parts looking like he would return
shortly. Felipe would continue to drop down the times with fifty five
minutes remaining currently fourteenth.
Felipe had only completed four laps so far in the session. But he would
finally get back out and would set a 1m:31.766 to move up to eleventh. A
1m:31.489 would see Felipe eleventh. Further improvement would see Felipe
set a 1m:30.999 to be seventh. Felipe would pit after a short eight lap run.
He would drop to eighth. Felipe would also come back out joining his
team-mate. He would continue to lap on the soft tyre currently ninth. But
the cars in front of him had all set their times on the super soft tyre. He
would remain in this position with the end of the session.
Lance Stroll:
Lance would follow his team-mate out also on the medium tyre for his
installation lap, also completing two laps. Lance would pit briefly prior to
returning still on the medium tyre. But this was one lap extra pitting
again. Lance would also come out running on the soft tyre. He would set a
1m:33.638 to currently be sixth. But as more times were set he would drop
down to the times to be thirteenth. Lance would continue his run on the soft
tyre and would set a 1m:32.621 to be twelfth. Lance would drop to thirteenth
to be just ahead of his team-mate. Lance would pit after a ten lap run. For
Lance his car would be seen been worked on with his mechanics working on the
floor of his car.
He was currently fifteenth with just over half an hour remaining. Lance was
still in his pit and currently seventeenth. Lance was able to get back out
with thirteen minutes remaining. He would set a 1m:31.684 to be fifteenth
but he would have to pit again with another technical issue. He was again
able to return still on the soft tyre and would keep running until the end
of the session.
