Australian GP: Williams Racing scores amazing point
By Andrew Hooper
April 10 2022
The results of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix would see the Williams Racing Team come away with their first point iof the 2022 season courtesy of a tenth place finish from Alex Albon. Team-mate Nicholas Latifi would finish in 16th. The start of the race would see the pair run opposing strategies with Alex stating on the hard tyre. For Nicholas his race would be uneventful but for Alex he would find himself running in seventh as a result of not pitting to change from the hard. And in what was a stunning strategy call by Alex and the team he would pit on the last lap and switch to the soft tyre for the final lap. Such were the gaps that he was able to bring the car home in tenth. So many posiitve that came from the race in terms of the the pace of the car. Hopefully it will be the start of improved performance for the team across all tyre types.

Australian Grand Prix Race Review
The grid for the
2022 Australian Grand prix would see the Williams Racing Team drivers
starting from 18th and 20th with Nicholas Latifi ahead of team-mate Alex
Albon. For the start of the race the drivers would start on different tyres
with Nicholas on the medium and Alex the hard tyre. At the front of the grid
it would be Leclerc on pole from Verstappen, Perez, Norris, Hamilton,
Russell, Ricciardo, Ocon, Sainz and Alonso tenth. The tyres that the top ten
would start on would be Medium for first through to eighth while Sainz and
Alonso were on the hard. of the rest of the field only the Aston Martins and
Magnussen were on the hard the rest the medium.
The drivers would complete the parade lap and with the start it would be
Leclerc leading from Verstappen, Hamilton, Perez and Russell. The Williams
were 18th and 20th but both would move up a place as Sainz was to spin his
car ending his race in the gravel. This would see the Virtual Safety Car
deployed with Leclerc still leading from Verstappen and Hamilton. The
Williams drivers were now 17th and 19th. But Stroll would pit changing to
the medium form the hard seeing Nicholas and Alex 17th and 18th. Stroll
would return to his pit switching back to the hard tyre meaning that he had
used the two dry tyre types.
The full Safety
Car would be deployed seeing the field bunch up while Sainz's car was
recovered and the race would restart. With eight laps completed Leclerc
continued to lead from Verstappen and Hamilton. Perez would be able to pass
Hamilton using his DRS on lap eleven at Turn three. Vettel would go off
dropping to last seeing the Williams pair 16th and 17th. The order was
Leclerc from Verstappen, Perez, Hamilton, Russell, Norris, Ricciardo, Ocon,
Gasly, and Alonso tenth. Nicholas would pit on the 14th lap switching to the
hard tyre. Alex had been able to get past Nicholas on the straight prior to
his stop seeing the Williams pair 15th and 19th. Schumacher would also pit
changing to the hard on lap seventeen.
Magnussen would have a moment running behind Tsunoda seeing him take to the
grass currently 14th. Ocon would pit on lap nineteen switching to the hard
dropping to 17th. Alex was now 14th as still on the hard. Lap twenty and
Verstappen would pit changing to the hard seeing him return in seventh.
Tsunoda would also pit dropping to 17th now on the hard. Alex would improve
to be 13th. Perez would pit dropping to ninth but others would pit including
both McLaren's. Alex was now in 12th and got himself involved in a fight
involving Ricciardo and Stroll. Leclerc would pit on lap twenty four joined
by Hamilton and Bottas. AA was now up to 11th but yet to pit.
Russell in
second was yet to pit as Perez passed Hamilton for fifth as the Safety Car
would be deployed with Vettel stopping at the side of the track after his
had spun the previous corner crashing into the barrier. He would coast down
to the nest corner. Alex was now in tenth but still yet to pit. Nicholas
would pit again returning in last but on a new set of hard tyres. Under the
safety Car Nicholas would really not lose anything as he had been running
last anyway. All now on the hard tyre the order was Leclerc, Verstappen,
Russell, Alonso, Perez, Hamilton, Magnussen, Norris, Ricciardo, and Alex
tenth. But Alonso, Magnussen and Albon were yet to pit to change from their
original hard tyres.
With the restart Verstappen would challenge Leclerc with Russell right
behind the Red Bull. Alex was now tenth and Nicholas 18th. Perez would pass
Alonso for fourth on lap thirty one. The n Hamilton would pass Alonso for
fifth as the Alpine driver struggled on old hard tyres. Lap thirty six and
both McLaren's would get past Magnussen seeing the Haas now ninth just ahead
of Albon. Perez was now in third with Russell and Hamilton fourth and fifth.
At the front Leclerc still led from Verstappen and Perez but Verstappen
would retire at the side of the track ending his race. This would see the
Virtual Safety Car deployed. Verstappen's car would require a fire
extinguisher as the hot parts of his car ignited.
This would see
Alex now ninth and Nicholas 17th for Williams. Drivers including Alonso and
Magnussen would pit seeing Alex now seventh but still yet to pit. The green
flag would come out and Leclerc was now leading from Perez, Russell and
Hamilton. Nicholas was now 16th as Stroll would pass Bottas as the Aston
Martin would force the Alfa wide. Gasly would also get past now in tenth.
Stroll would get a five second penalty for weaving down the straight with
the Aston currently ninth. On forty six lap old hard tyres Alex would set a
personal best with ten laps remaining. Lap fifty two and Gasly would pass
Stroll for ninth while Alex continued to run in seventh.
Lap fifty three and the order was Leclerc, Perez, Russell, Hamilton, Norris,
Ricciardo, Alex, Ocon, Gasly and Bottas tenth. The final laps would count
down and the order would remain the same and it would not be until the final
lap that Alex would pit switch to the soft tyre and was able to bring his
car home in tenth. An amazing drive would finish in a fantastic tenth for
Alex and the team. In conversations on the radio his engineer, Alex and Jost
Capito would congratulate Alex for the amazing result. "Engineer: P10 P10

Capito: Alex awesome race awesome you got the point congratulations Alex:
