Ahead of the 2026 Spanish
Grand Prix, Paul Williams, Chief Trackside Engineer, shares insights into
the key technical factors that will shape the weekend.
What are the key
technical challenges of the Madrid?
• A brand new circuit results in no reference data to work from. The fresh
surface will start low on grip and evolve quickly, and the walls leave no
room for error. Friday is as much about learning the track as setting up
the car. • Turn 12, La Monumental, is a half-kilometre banked corner
taken at high speed for around six seconds, with a blind exit. Nothing
else on the calendar loads the car, tyres, and driver like it. • The
layout mixes a tight, low-speed, walled section around the exhibition
centre with a fast, flowing loop through Valdebebas. The set-up challenge
is finding the right balance between the two, on top of two long straights
leading into heavy braking zones. • Significant elevation change, blind
crests, two tunnels, and aggressive kerbs add further difficulty. With few
overtaking opportunities, qualifying position and a clean weekend matter
more than usual.
How do the 2026 regulations
influence the approach this weekend? • Being a new circuit, Madrid
adds an extra layer to energy management. Preparation is based on assumed
grip levels and racing lines, and the risk of reality diverging from those
predictions is higher than usual. • Balancing energy spend between the
long straights into Turns 1 & 4, and the many short straights, each
requiring a small energy contribution, is a challenge we haven't faced to
this degree before. • Several corners could go from flat-out to needing
a lift off throttle, depending on grip. When a corner is taken flat, it
drastically changes the energy management approach for the straights
before and after it. Adapting our deployment to the car and driver to
extract maximum performance will be the real challenge.
What are the tyre
challenges of the circuit? • Pirelli has allocated the middle of
its range: C2 (hard), C3 (medium) and C4 (soft). • Grip is the biggest
unknown, and it will shape both tyre warm-up and the risk of graining on
the softer compounds. We expect low grip early on, with rapid evolution
across the weekend. • Sustained load through the high-speed corners
puts heavy demand on the left-hand tyres, and the tarmac will run hot in
sunny conditions, both of which promote tyre overheating. • Qualifying
laps will need to balance front tyre warm-up for the early braking zones
against controlling rear overheating later in the lap. • Overheating is
the more likely limitation in the race, unless graining occurs.
What are the strategic
considerations for the race? • Strategic uncertainty is high across
the board. Several circuit-specific factors can only be confirmed on track
and will need to be fed into the practice run plans as we go. • Pit
loss is expected to be large, around 22 seconds plus stationary time, and
overtaking is expected to be as difficult as Singapore. Together, that
points towards a one-stop race. • The narrow layout, new surface, and
close walls mean every session is likely to be disrupted by flags or
stoppages.
