WilliamsF1 continues to struggle

Spanish GP Saturday 2nd Practice

The second Saturday practice session in Spain would do little to give the BMW WilliamsF1 team any encouragement as to their prospects in this afternoons qualifying and in tomorrows race.

For Juan Pablo and Ralf they would finish the session way down the times in fifteenth and sixteenth respectively. After his off in the opening practice Juan Pablo Montoya would have another spin off the track at turn 12, he was able to continue. For team-mate Ralf he was also way off the pace been more than two seconds behind Alonso.

Montoya in his garageAfter Friday's qualifying the drivers complained of their difficulties in finding the right balance in their cars, but they were confident that they would be able to fix the problem. After the two practice sessions it would seem that they both have a long way to go in finding the necessary speed to allow them to perform well come Sunday.

As for the other teams it would be Renault's Fernando Alonso who would head the times after the practice session. His lap of 1m:17.670 would see him half a second ahead of the field. His time was backed up by his team-mate Trulli who finished third.

In the middle of the Renault drivers was Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, driving the new Ferrari F2003-GA, who set the second fastest time.

Michael Schumacher was fourth fastest, almost a second down on Alonso's time, with Toyota's Olivier Panis in fifth. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, quickest in the opening session, ended sixth ahead of his team-mate David Coulthard and BAR-Honda driver Jenson Button.

Both Jaguar drivers would finish in the top ten with Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia in ninth and tenth respectively. His performance so far this weekend certainly has helped Pizzonia in his fight to keep his drive with Jaguar.

After his good showing on Friday da Matta would drop down the times to be eleventh. For BAR's Jacques Villeneuve, twelfth quickest driver, his session would be ruined when he was to crash his car into the tyre barriers at turn three, damaging the car and making lots of works for his mechanics.

Will it be possible for the BMW WilliamsF1 team to improve their cars prior to this afternoons qualifying. Looking at how they have struggled to be near the top of the times it is doubtful.
