Canadian GP Friday Practice

The opening Friday practice for the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix would see both BMW WilliamsF1 drivers in the top six, with Juan Pablo second and Ralf sixth. In a session that was affected by intermittent showers so many drivers took the time to check their wet weather setup. With the rain not a lot can be read into the times been set.

Ralf SchumacherThe start of the session would see Juan Pablo and the two Toyota drivers first to go out. They would be joined by Kimi Raikkonen. The opening twenty minutes would see most drivers improving, with Panis fastest in the early stages with a lap time of 1m:17.464. But he would soon be passed as Juan Pablo set the fastest time. Jaguar driver Antonio Pizzonia would be the first to go under 1.17.

For Juan Pablo he would have a moment as he went wide in the grass, returning back to the pits. Minardi's Justin Wilson and Jacques Villeneuve would take to the track, with Jaguar's Mark Webber moving into fourth.

For Ferrari Rubens Barrichello would go out but on a flying lap he would go straight on at the last chicane. Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella and BAR's Jenson Button would go out, while again Juan Pablo would have problems with his car under braking, but he would keep control of the car. Now the teams would have to deal with a wet track as rain started falling over the circuit now.

Ralf Schumacher would continue despite the conditions. He would be joined by Barrichello who would improve his best time, but the Brazilian is still down the times. On another lap Rubens would set the tenth best lap time. The rain would stop but just as quickly light showers would start to fall.

For Sauber's Heinz Harald Frentzen he would go straight at the chicane, due to the wet track. Michael Schumacher was very cautious as he came back to the pits such were the conditions.

Drivers were finding the track conditions difficult with Button's car sliding but he was able to keep it under control. Jordan's Ralph Firman would take to the track but would return to the pits. Juan Pablo was out on the damp track, looking to find the right set-up under such conditions.

Fisichella and both Renault drivers would return to the track, with Trulli making a mistake at the end of the straight, just before the tight left/right corner. The pair of Trulli and Alonso would set lap times that would see them at the bottom of the times. Another driver finding the going difficult was Villeneuve who was driving hard, sliding his car, finishing in thirteenth.

In the late stages of the session Pizzonia would return to the track, setting a time of 1.31, giving you a good indication of the difficult conditions. With the end of the session we had Pizzonia first and the Renault drivers were last having been caught out by the wet conditions. This afternoons qualifying should be very interesting especially if some driver are able to run on a dry track while others are aced with a wet one.
