Valencia Test 01:05:2002 Day Two of Four

For test driver Antonio Pizzonia the second day of testing at the Valencia circuit would see him set the third fastest time of the day but the team was not able to work through their test schedule for the day. Pizzonia would finish the day in third.

Tim Newton, WilliamsF1 Test Team Manager, had the following comments: “A somewhat disappointing day clocking up only 31 laps. We were unable to work through all the tasks we set ourselves but hope for a better day tomorrow”.

McLaren test driver Alex Wurz would set the fastest time of the day topped the timesheets. Wurz was driving one of last years cars updated. Sauber driver Felipe Massa followed in second. Wurz would complete ninety laps, joining him was regular driver David Coulthard who would finish the day 1.6 seconds slower than Wurz. The McLaren team spent the day tyre testing trying to determine why the new MP4-17 does not run well with the new Michelin tyres.

For Sauber it has been 'a very good day' according to Felipe Massa, who clocked the second fastest time before he left Spain to hand over to Nick Heidfeld tomorrow. 'The car was running very well,' the Brazilian said, 'and we were able to try a number of configurations including different qualifying set-ups and also a lot of tyre work.'

The Renault F1 Team completed an encouraging second day of testing in spite of two engine problems which interrupted the team's running. Jarno Trulli, at the wheel of chassis R202-05, joined Fernando Alonso, with both drivers conducting development work on the traction control system as well as evaluating a number of engine modifications.

For the Jaguar pair of Pedro de la Rosa and Eddie Irvine they would finish in fourth and eighth. The team spent the day preparing for the Austrian and Monaco Grand Prix. Any new developments for the troubled R3 are not expected until the British Grand Prix.
