To win a Championship

This weekends Japanese Grand Prix is the final race of the season and it is the final opportunity for the BMW WilliamsF1 team to beat their rivals at Ferrari for the 2003 constructors championship. The WilliamsF1 team takes a three point deficit to Ferrari into the race in Japan.

MontoyaAfter seeing their Drivers championship title hopes disappear when Juan Pablo Montoya could only manage a sixth place finish in the United States Grand Prix, while Ferrari's Michael Schumacher went on to win, the WilliamsF1 team are now focusing on the Constructors title and they are determined to ensure that come the end of the Japanese Grand Prix they come away with this title. For BMW WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher he is confident that the team can secure this championship. On his website Ralf spoke of what was necessary in Japan.

Ralf said: "There's only one thing we can do now. We've got to attack Ferrari in Suzuka to win the Constructors' Championship at least. And I think our chances of winning this title are good indeed as we're just three points behind Ferrari. I'm convinced that we should be able to close this gap."

But what does the BMW WilliamsF1 team have to do to ensure they win. Put simply come the end of the race the team has to score four points more than championship leader Ferrari.

Obviously there are several possible ways for the WilliamsF1 team to come away with the necessary points lead over Ferrari.

First of all the WilliamsF1 team can not be satisfied with scoring an equal number of points as if this was to occur Ferrari would secure the tile as they have won more races this year giving them the advantage.

The quickest and probably the most difficult way to achieve victory would be for the team to come away with a 1-2 for the team. If Ralf and Juan Pablo were to finish in these positions it would not matter what positions the Ferrari drivers were able to come home in they would could only, at best, score eleven points. This would not be enough to see them take the constructors title.

Other combinations include the WilliamsF1 pair coming home in first and third position with the Ferraris finishing second and fourth. If this was the case Ferrari would keep the constructors title as both teams would finish with 160 points. As I previously mentioned an equal points finish would be to Ferrari's advantage.

If a Ferrari was to win and the WilliamsF1 drivers were to come second and third the other Ferrari would either have to finish outside the points or retire as the fourteen points scored by the WilliamsF1 pair would see them take a four point lead over Ferrari, securing the title.

To be more certain regarding their title hopes the WilliamsF1 team has to ensure that both drivers finish the race.

Should both Ferraris retire, a fifth place for either WilliamsF1 driver would be enough for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team to secure the title.

Even though the talk regarding the drivers title has focused on the chances of Kimi Raikkonen beating rival Michael Schumacher it should not be forgotten that if Juan Pablo Montoya can score one more point than Raikkonen he will succeed in being the BMW WilliamsF1 Team’s first runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship.

One can only hope that the BMW WilliamsF1 Team can overtake the three points that they lag behind the Ferrari team, coming away with the Constructors’ title to round off what has been by far the teams best season to date.
