The BMW WilliamsF1 team has secured 3rd & 4th on the grid for the 2004 Bahrain GP. Juan Pablo is third with Ralf fourth. Both drivers would make small mistakes in their final runs losing an opportunity to secure pole position. But Ralf felt that they should be able to challenge the Ferrari's.

Bahrain GP Saturday Qualifying Part Two |
| |
| This
session would see the cars run as they will at the start of the race so
again it is somewhat difficult to maker a comparison on the times
between the various drivers. As such the results of the final qualifying
runs in Bahrain, where Juan Pablo was third and Ralf fourth, should not
be considered to be a let down after both drivers were at the top of the
times after their first qualifying runs.
Neither Juan Pablo or Ralf
in later interviews seemed to be too disappointed with their efforts.
Both made small mistakes on the runs and as such did not secure pole but
both drivers are looking forward to tomorrow's race.
Out
first in the final qualifying run was Minardi's Zolt Baumgartner. His
time was a tenth slower than his earlier qualifying time and in no way
could be considered to be a benchmark time. He was joined by team-mate
Bruni. He would leave his team-mate over a second behind taking the
provisional pole, if ever so briefly.
Another rookie Jordan's Giorgio Pantano was next and he would finish
over a second ahead of Bruni. His only moment was in sector two when he
was to hit a bollard, possibly damaging his car, losing part of the
bodywork. Team-mate Nick Heidfeld would be over half of a second ahead
after his lap, with a time of 1m:33.506.
The first of the Sauber's would take to the track with Felipe Massa
losing time in sector one but recovering in sector two. He would go
fastest. For Jaguar's mark Webber his lap would see him down on Massa in
the first two sectors but he would recover in the final sector. His time
would only see him second. Webber's team-mate Klein would set an
impressive time to beat his team-mate by 0.3 seconds.
The first of the McLaren's would be next out with David Coulthard
finishing over half a second ahead of Klein to move into first position.
For Toyota's Cristiano da Matta he would put in an impressive lap to
beat Coulthard by 0.002 seconds. But his time would be quickly surpassed
by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian would be over a second
faster than the Toyota. Rubens time was the first one which was
indicative of a pole position time.
For Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella his time would see him move in fourth,
a lap of
1m.31.731. Next was the BAR Honda of Takuma Sato. So far this weekend
the BAR's had been setting impressive times. Sato would continue this
good showing to be just three tenths behind Rubens to go second.
Team-mate Button was next and he was slightly down in sector one, losing
more time in the second, to finish third behind his team-mate.
Renault's
Jarno Trulli was impressive in sector one setting the fastest time, but
he would lose time in the rest of his lap to only finish fourth.
Team-mate Alonso would see hi slap spoilt when he was to lock a wheel
and run wide at Turn one. He would also run off the track at the final
turn to finish a poor thirteenth. A terrible lap from the young
Spaniard.
Toyota's Oliver Panis, after setting an impressive time in the earlier
qualifying, would lose time in sector one, finishing fifth but with
several other drivers left to run he would not stay there for long. Next
was Michael Schumacher. He would lock a wheel at Turn one and be just
ahead of Rubens time in sector one. But the rest of his lap was
excellent seeing him go fastest by four tenths.
For McLaren's Kimi
Raikkonen he would not attempt a second qualifying run, returning to the
pits after his out lap. Was this tactics on the part fo the McLaren team
given his penalty of ten grid positions. But he will have to start
f5ronm the back of the grid.
Now the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers would come out and Juan Pablo would be
quickest in sector one. He would be another tenth up on the fastest time
but it all went wrong in sector three where he would lose time seeing
him finish in third behind the two Ferrari's. Ralf was next and he would
look impressive in sector one but would lose time in the second and
finish fourth. |
