Spanish GP Saturday Qualifying Part One

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the opening qualifying session would see Juan Pablo Montoya go fastest. Team-mate Ralf Schumacher was also well placed in fourth. can the team turn this excellent showing and come up with their first pole position.

MontoyaMichael Schumacher was first out. 22.2 seconds for sector one, finally setting a time of 1m:16.320. BAR's Jenson Button was next and he was 0.164 seconds quicker in sector one, still ahead after sector two, but would finish second by just 0.142 seconds.

JPM would be the next driver to start his flying lap and he would be 0.144 seconds up in sector one but it was apparent that he was carrying some understeer on his FW26. He would be half a second up after sector two and would cross the line with a time of 1m:15.574 to go fastest. A great job from Juan Pablo.

Alonso would start his flying lap, in front of his home crowd. After getting his rear right wheel onto the grass he would lose 0.63 seconds in sector one. He would be a second down but it is believed that the team are running a heavy fuel load and hard tyres for a two-stop race.

Trulli was next and he would be two tenths down in sector one, 0.343 down in sector two, and he would set a time of 1m:16.156 to move into second. Rubens Barrichello would start his lap and was 0.078 down after sector one. He would lose half a second in sector two to finish only in fifth.

Ralf Schumacher would start his lap and go ahead by 0.088 after sector one. But he would be 0.139 down in sector two. He would finish in second ahead of Trulli and four-tenths behind his team-mate. Raikkonen was out and he was 0.164 down in sector one, a further half second down in sector two, and would finish in fourth.

Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella was out and would set his best sector one time and would finish in an excellent second after setting the fastest last sector time. Team-mate Massa would finish in third, just 0.025 seconds from his team-mate. Now it was Toyota's Olivier Panis and he would be 0.297 down in sector one, 0.323 down in sector two. He would finish in sixth.

Coulthard was only 0.165 down after sector one, 0.285 down in sector two, but despite his encouraging pace would only finish in tenth after losing time in the final sector. Jaguar's Mark Webber would finish in seventh. Team-mate Christian Klien would start his flying lap but was almost one second down after sector one. He would pick up some time in sector two but he would be last.

Minardi's Zolt Baumgartner would be a massive 1.6 seconds down in sector one, moving into last position with a time of 1m:21.620. BAR's Takuma Sato would start his lap. He would be a tenth down after sector one, with understeer showing he was now 0.705 down in sector two. He would finish in tenth. Jordan's Nick Heidfeld was out and was 0.109 down in sector one, 0.683 down in sector two, but after a messy third sector would finish in fifteenth.

Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta would foinish in fourteenth, ahead of Alonso. The final two drivers Bruni and Pantano would finish in eighteenth and nineteenth positions. So it would be Juan Pablo would would be quickest at the end of the pre-qualifying session.
