In a major turn around the BMW WilliamsF1 team would find their drivers 1st & 2nd after Canadian Pre Qualifying. Ralf would lead Juan Pablo. The best that Ralf had previously been able to achieve was ninth in one practice session. Can they mainatin this in the final qualifying?

in a real reversal f form the BMW WilliamsF1 team would see its drivers
first and second after the first qualifying runs. Ralf had provisional
pole from team-mate Juan Pablo. After the strong performances from the
Renault team it was surprising to see the two FW26's at the top of the
times.
The
morning practice would see the Renault's of Jarno Trulli and Fernando
Alonso placed their cars in the top two positions. Michael Schumacher
would be the first driver out on his qualifying run, followed by Rubens
Barrichello and Jenson Button.
Michael would set a time of 20.5 seconds in the first sector, 23.6 in
the second sector, and he would cross the line with a time of 1m:13.463.
Rubens would be slower than Michael in the first two sectors finishing
with a lap time of 1m:13.782 and second position. Button was next and he
would push both Ferrari's down the order by setting the fastest time so
far, a lap time of 1m:13.333.
Now it was the turn of Jarno Trulli. But he would be slow in the first
sector, 20.6 seconds, and slow again in the second. But he would find
time in the last sector to go ahead of Button by four tenths with a time
of 1m:1:13.149. Alonso was next and he would be the first driver to set
a time in the 1m:12 seconds with a time of 1:12.826. Things were looking
very good for the Renault team.
Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella would move into fifth with his lap, a time
of 1m:13.663. Now it was the Jaguar of Mark Webber. Mark had been
struggling over the course of practice and his first qualifying lap was
no different with a a very disappointing time of 1m:14.715 to be
seventh. For Juan Pablo he would be one tenth down after sector one but
would pick up time over the rest of the lap to set a time of 1:12.746.
This is a major change in Juan Pablo's
fortunes given the difficulties he had in practice.
Sauber's Felipe Massa was next and his lap would see him finish in
eighth, with a time of 1m:14.392. Jordan's Nick Heidfeld's lap would see
him produce a time of 1m:15.657 and he was in tenth position. Toyota's
Olivier Panis was next out and his lap would see his TF104 in eighth
position, a time of 1m:14.166. Jaguar's Christian Klien on his first
visit to the circuit would finish in eleventh, 1m:14.751.
Minardi's Gimmi Bruni would stop out on the track bringing out the red
flag in order to remove the stranded Minardi. Next would be Minardi
team-mate Zsolt Baumgartner. He would be 1.3 seconds slower in the first
sector, finishing with a time of 1m:17.903. Takuma Sato was next out and
he was in a good position to move to the top of the times. His first
sector would see him gain time on Juan Pablo but he would lose it in the
second. He would have to be happy with
third position, time of 1m:12.989.
The McLaren's of Coulthard and Raikkonen would have their runs and David
would finish in fifth position with a 1m:13.206. Kimi was slower than
his team-mate and would drop to eighth with a time of 1m:13.463. Ralf
was next, could he match Juan Pablo's performance? He would be quickest
in the second sector and he would snatch provisional pole away from his
team-mate with a time of 1m:12.441. What an amazing turn around from the
WilliamsF1 team.
Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta would move into twelfth at the expense of
his team-mate Panis, time of 1m:13.807. The final runner was Jordan's
replacement driver Timo Glock. He would finish in eighteenth ahead of
the two Minardi's.
So this session was a great result for the BMW WilliamsF1 team after the
difficulties of practice but will they turn this in to a pole position. |
