New look Nürburgring

For spectators of the 2002 European Grand Prix they will notice changes to the Nürburgring Formula One circuit, with the Castrol 'S' chicane after the pit straight been replaced by the new “Mercedes Arena”.

The new section is comprised of five new corners, including three left-handers and two right-handers. These changes have been made in order to reduce the risk of first corner accident which have been common in the past.

The renovations were carried out over the past year following last year’s race on June 24 and finished recently. The changes mean the track length has been extended from 4.556 kilometres to 5.139 kilometres, with the spectator  capacity raised from 142,000 to 152,000.
