The BMW WilliamsF1 team would score their best result of the season so far with a 2nd & 3rd in the Monaco GP. Nick Heidfeld would lead team-mate Mark Webber home in the race after Nick was able to pass Mark in one of their pit stops. A fantastic result for the team!

Monaco GP Review

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the Monaco Grand Prix result would be a major improvement in the teams fortunes after their disappointing result in Spain. Nick and Mark would finish in second and third positions respectively. This is a great result for the BMW WilliamsF1 team at a time when there has been much speculation about the BMW and WilliamsF1 partnership.

WebberWith Kimi Raikkonen claiming pole position and Alonso right next to him in second, and BMW WilliamsF1's Mark Webber in third the drivers would start their parade lap. Montoya would start from 16th after his practice penalty. The race would be over 78 laps of the tight and twisty Monaco circuit.

Raikkonen would take up his position with the rest of the grid lining up behind him. With the lights going off the start would see Raikkonen leading Alonso. Fisichella had passed Webber, with Trulli following Giancarlo through. A poor start for the Australian. Montoya was in twelfth. Nick Heidfeld was behind his team-mate in sixth. At the start Massa had improved to be in ninth. Kimi would lock his front tyres going into the first corner.

Kimi was right on the pace setting a fastest lap of 1m:17.548 to be 1.7 seconds ahead of Alonso. Mark was 6.1 seconds behind the leader after lap two. Nick was just 0.7 behind Mark. Another fastest lap for Kimi on lap three, a 1m:17.108, as he extended his lead. Fisichella and Trulli were in third and fourth.

Another fastest lap, a 1m:17.063 for Kimi, while Ralf Schumacher was in sixteenth. Mark was now just 0.8 behind Trulli. Lap five and Kimi sets another quick time, 1m:17.052, with his lead now out to 2.3 seconds. Lap six and it would be Fernando's turn to go fastest with a 1m:16.865 to claw back a few tenths from Kimi's lead. Mark and Nick were still in fifth and sixth. Coulthard and Michael Schumacher made up the top eight. Lap seven and Alonso would keep the gap to Kimi at 2.1 seconds. Fisichella was 1.4 back from Alonso, and Trulli is 4.5 behind him. Kimi goes fastest with a 1m:16.811 on lap eight. His lead was now 2.4 seconds. Mark was 10.1 seconds behind the leader. Kimi goes even faster, 1m:16.562. At the start of lap ten Kimi's lead had gown slightly to now be 3.2 seconds. Fisichella was just 1.7 seconds behind his team-mate.

Jordan's Karthikeyan would pit from last place, returning to the race. Mark was challenging Trulli for fourth. Lap fifteen and Kimi was still leading from Alonso with Fisichella in third. Mark was still right behind Trulli, but he would find it hard to pass the Toyota as they started lap seventeen. Mark was paying the penalty for his poor start. Both Jordan's had been lapped. Michael Schumacher was having a similar problem trying to pass Coulthard who was in seventh.

Lap eighteen and Kimi would set another fastest lap, a 1m:16.414, with his lead out to 4.8 seconds over Alonso. Nick was now right behind Mark as they both challenged Trulli. Trulli was now 10.6 seconds behind third placed Fisichella. Lap twenty and Kimi was still pushing hard with another quicker lap of 1m:16.265. Kimi had increased his lead by 0.6 seconds in just one lap. Kimi's lead was now out to 5.9 seconds on lap twenty two. Karthikeyan was now three laps down after having made several extra pit stops to have his car checked. He would
retire on lap twenty three.

HeidfeldLap twenty three and Alonso had been able to reduce Kimi's lead by a fraction but Kimi was able to pull it back. There would be yellow flags as Albers had crashed at Mirabeau trapping Coulthard, Schumacher, Barrichello and Montoya behind him. Michael would hit the rear of Coulthard's car losing his front wing. With a safety car been deployed there would be a flurry of activity in the pits as both Renault's, the two WilliamsF1 cars, and Michael Schumacher's Ferrari would all pit. Coulthard would also stop but he would get out of his car to retire with the damage to his car too much to continue. Raikkonen, Trulli and Villeneuve were the only cars in the top 10 not to stop. Trulli was now in second. Fisichella was forced to wait while Alonso was serviced in the pits losing time seeing him now in eighth. Michael was down in thirteenth. Mark and Nick were fourth and fifth with Mark just 1.2 seconds behind third placed Alonso.

On lap twenty eight the top eight were Raikkonen, Trulli, Alonso, Webber, Heidfeld, Massa, Villeneuve, and Fisichella. The race would restart on lap thirty with Trulli 5.6 seconds behind the McLaren. Kimi would lap Michael Schumacher on another bad day for the champion. Alonso was looking to be in a good position having already made his first pit stop while Kimi had not. Mark was right behind the Renault, with Nick a similar margin behind his
team-mate. At the end of lap thirty Kimi's lead was out to 9.0 seconds.

Friesacher would spin his Minardi at end of the straight exiting the tunnel, crashing into the wall, causing the yellow flags to be waved. He would get out OK. Lap thirty two and Kimi's lead was out to 13.8 seconds. Trulli was going very slowly while on lap thirty four Kimi would set another fastest lap with a 1m:16.222. Massa, Villeneuve, and Fisichella were sixth to eighth.

Another fastest lap for Kimi, a 1m:16.046, on lap thirty five as he pulled out a massive 2.8 seconds extra on his lead over Alonso. Trulli was also pulling away from the Renault. Alonso was now 25.1 seconds behind Kimi on lap thirty six. Mark and Nick were still in fourth and fifth. On the start of lap thirty eight Jacques would pit, making his first stop. The length of his stop would suggest he was on a single stop strategy. Mark was just 1.0 seconds behind Alonso.

On the start of lap forty Trulli would pit from second. Jarno rejoins in eleventh behind his team-mate Ralf, who had yet to stop. Lap forty and Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap, a 1m:15,995. Given his position in thirteenth it seemed a little pointless. Mark was in third just 0.6 behind Alonso. with Nick a further one second back. Michael goes even quicker with a 1m:15.842. Ralf would pit while leader Raikkonen would also come in. He was 34.7 seconds ahead of Alonso.

WebberKimi would return still in the lead of the race, but would he have to stop again. Only Barrichello, Montoya, and Luizzi had yet to stop. Lap forty three and Kimi's lead over Alonso was 13.1 seconds. The next lap and Kimi would gain a few tenths while Mark and Nick were right behind the Renault. Massa was in fifth, with Fisichella sixth. Barrichello and Liuzzi would pit at the end of lap forty five. Rubens would stall on his way out of his pit but his mechanics would get him going. The next lap and Montoya would pit. He would return in eighth.
Rubens would receive a drive through penalty for speeding in the pit lane making the weekend even more of a poor performance from the Ferrari team.

Lap fifty one and Massa would pit for a second time. Both WilliamsF1 drivers were still trying to find a way past Alonso. At the front lap fifty one would see Kimi set a time in the 1m:20 second bracket, a very slow lap. But the cars behind him were also running in the 1m:19 second bracket. Ralf and brother Michael were challenging Villeneuve for ninth.

Lap fifty three and Kimi was back in the 1m:18's, with a lead of 15.1 seconds over Alonso. Fisichella and Trulli were fighting over fifth place. Alonso appeared to be struggling but there was nothing Mark could do to get past him. Alonso was running in the 1m:21's slowing Mark down as well. Lap fifty six and Kimi's lead was now out to 22.7 seconds, with Mark just 0.4 behind Alonso. At the end of this lap Nick would pit from fourth. Was Mark on the same strategy?

The answer was yes as on the next lap Mark would pit from third, joined by Michael. Nick was able to get ahead of Mark as a result of his quicker pit stop. Lap sixty and Kimi's lead was out to 28.4 seconds over Alonso. Luizzi would suffer a puncture but was able to get back to his pit to only retire with suspension damage. Nick and Mark were in third and fourth, while fifth placed Fisichella was been challenged by Trulli, Montoya, Massa, and Villeneuve.

HeidfeldOn lap sixty three the two Sauber's would have a coming together at the end of the start/finish straight. Villeneuve would retire after making his way back to his pit. On lap sixty four Fisichella would be passed by Trulli, Montoya, Ralf, and Rubens. Trulli would make a mistake at the chicane and was passed by Montoya. Trulli would pit his damaged car. Nick and Mark were again challenging Alonso's Renault. On lap sixty seven Kimi's lead was now 32.7 seconds. With ten laps remaining Alonso's rear tyres looked very second hand. Nick would try a move on the Renault at the chicane after the tunnel but Fernando was able to hold on to his second place.

Montoya was now in fifth, with Ralf, Barrichello, and Michael making up the top eight. It looks like Ferrari would come away with some points after all. Lap seventy one and both the WilliamsF1 cars continued to pressure Alonso, and coming out of the tunnel Nick was able to pass the Renault and move into second position.

Alonso was trying to defend his position from Mark with Nick already 3.5 seconds clear of the Renault. Just goes to show how slow the Renault was. Mark would try to pass at the chicane on lap seventy four but the Spaniard was able to keep ahead. Mark would eventually get past the Renault with both drivers making some aggressive moves to hold and take the third place. So we would have both WilliamsF1 cars on the podium with Nick second and Mark
in third. Alonso in fourth was been attacked by Montoya, could he hold onto? The Renault really did look to be in a very bad way with its tyres.

Lap seventy seven and Kimi was still leading with Nick and Mark in second and third. Alonso had a group of cars right behind him. At the front Kimi would take the chequered flag to win the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix. A second and third would be the BMW WilliamsF1's best result so far this year. How will Mark take the fact that Nick finished ahead of him? Alonso would come home in fourth with Montoya, Ralf, Michael and Rubens making up the top eight.
