Monza Test 09:07:2002 Day One of Four

The BMW WilliamsF1 team has an two pronged test program for this week with Antonio Pizzonia testing at Monza while Marc Gené was in Valencia.

At the Monza test Antonio Pizzonia would set the fastest time, with his fastest lap been 1m:23.577. He was more than three seconds faster than Toyota's Allan McNish, the only other driver present.

Pizzonia would complete fifty nine laps, while he conducted set-up work of the FW24 as well as tyre testing for the Michelin. The test team also carried out aerodynamics tests on the FW24.

Pizzonia did most of his running in the morning, completing just four laps in the afternoon as his car underwent a scheduled BMW engine change. His only problem was an electrical glitch that brought him to a halt just 500 metres after starting his first run at 0900.

As for Toyota's Allan McNish he would only run in the afternoon, after problems in the morning.

McNish said: "We had some problems this morning and did not do any running at all. We started to work on aero balance in the afternoon in preparation for the Italian Grand Prix, as Monza is different to any other circuit for this. We also looked closely at how the car rides the kerbs - a big problem we had in Montreal and something we have to work on at this kind of track, but it's early days."

"Today is about low downforce set-up work. The car seems to fly over the kerbs and never lands. I can't attack as much as I'd like to. It was better than it was earlier in the season, but there is still work to do."
