The BMW WilliamsF1 team would only come away with a fifth for Mark Webber in the Canadian Grand Prix. Team-mate Nick Heidfeld would retire with an engine failure with smoke coming from the rear of his car. Overall a disappointing result for the team after the successes in the last two races.

Canadian GP Review

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the Canadian Grand Prix would see the team only come away with a fifth place from Mark Webber. Team-mate Nick Heidfeld would retire with an engine failure.

WebberWith BAR's Jenson Button on pole and Ferrari's Michael Schumacher in second the grid would move away on their parade lap for the start of the 70 lap Canadian Grand Prix. After his qualifying problems Rubens would start from the pit lane. Jenson would complain about a gear selection problem while on the parade lap with his team via the radio. With the weather been hotter than normal the start of the race would see Button get away but the two Renaults would get away very quickly with Fisichella leading from Alonso. The two McLaren's were in fourth and fifth with Jenson third. Michael was down in sixth.

From their thirteenth and fourteenth grid places the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers Nick and Mark would be in tenth and fourteenth. Montoya was in fourth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Lap two and Fisichella would set a fastest lap of 1m:17.249, Villeneuve would pit and have his nose changed. Trulli and Sato were in seventh and eighth. Lap three and Fisichella's lead was 1.3 seconds over Alonso. Mark had moved up one place to be in thirteenth but 15.2 seconds behind the leader. Lap four and Alonso was fastest with a lap of 1m:16.045, taking a few tenths off his team-mates lead.

Button was still in third with Montoya fourth. Lap six and Alonso was closing in onto his team-mate with another fastest lap, a 1m:15.935. Down to eighth place the drivers were spread out fairly evenly. Ralf was looking to pass Nick for his tenth place. Behind this pair Mark had been attacking Coulthard, even making a
mistake at the hairpin locking his brakes.

HeidfeldLap seven and Fisichella was fastest, a 1m:15.455. The Renaults were certainly pulling away from the rest of the field. Nick was now 20.5 seconds behind the leader. The McLaren's were starting to pick up their pace at the front. Montoya was now 1.1 seconds behind Button on lap nine. Villeneuve was last and his car
certainly looked a handful. Alonso was on the radio saying that he was much quicker than Fisichella. Lap eleven and Alonso sets another fastest lap with a 1m:15.441. Alonso was now just 0.9 seconds behind his team-mate. But Fisichella would respond with a 1m:15.169.

On lap thirteen Michael would pit from sixth showing that he was very light on fuel. Michael was now just a ahead of Mark in twelfth. Nick was now in ninth. Fisichella was again fastest with a 1m:15.115, been now 1.7 seconds ahead of Alonso. Both McLaren's were now in the 1m:15 second bracket. Ralf was still right behind Nick. On lap sixteen Button would pit joined by Ralf Schumacher. At the front we had the two Renaults followed by the two McLaren's. Trulli and Sato were in fifth and sixth. Button was now in seventh as team-mate Sato would pit on lap seventeen. Sato would return in twelfth.

Kimi would set the fastest lap with a 1m:15.011. Nick was in eighth and Mark eleventh. Montoya was now fastest with a 1m:14.749. Lap nineteen and Coulthard would pit from eleventh. Montoya was flying with a 1m:14.665 lap. He was rapidly closing on the Renault's. Juan Pablo was now 6.3 seconds behind Alonso. Trulli in fifth would set a personal best with a 1m:15.923. Lap twenty two and Massa and Nick would pit from eighth and ninth. Nick would return in eleventh. Mark was now in eighth but yet to stop. Alonso would lose time to Fisichella while he tried to pass Klein.

WebberSato would pit and retire his car on lap twenty three. Kimi was now fastest with a 1m:14.384. Trulli would pit from fifth, returning in eighth. Lap twenty four and Alonso and Raikkonen would pit. The next lap and Fisichella would pit, joined by Montoya. But Montoya would make a mistake as he exited the pits. He would run wide sliding off the track allowing Alonso past. Mark was in seventh but yet to stop. Rubens had also yet to pit. At the front it was Fisichella leading Alonso by 3.3 seconds. In third Montoya was leading Raikkonen. Lap twenty nine and Mark would pit. Button was in fifth followed by Michael Schumacher. Nick was in eleventh.

Alonso was closing in onto Fisichella, on lap thirty he was now only 1.2 seconds. Alonso was complaining about Fisichella. He was told by his team to pass him. mark would make a mistake a the hairpin running wide. Mark was in twelfth with Nick in tenth. Montoya was closing in onto the back of Alonso. Lap thirty three and Alonso would pass Fisichella. Montoya would also pass the Renault. Fisichella was losing hydraulic pressure and he would pit on lap thirty four and he would retire. Fisichella was having a poor season with a 50% retirement rate.

Lap thirty five and Button and Michael would pit. It was a long stop for Michael. Montoya was now in second just 1.2 seconds behind Alonso. Kimi was in third with Button fourth. Nick was in eighth while Mark was down in tenth. Nick was running behind seventh placed Massa and was told to cool his engine. Ralf was right behind Nick. Lap thirty nine would see Alonso slowing and he would pit. His rear suspension was damaged when he hit the wall. This would allow Montoya into the lead with Raikkonen second. Button was in third with Michael fourth. Nick was in seventh and Mark ninth. Fifth and sixth were Trulli and Massa.

HeidfeldLap forty three and Kimi would have a slow lap while passing traffic. As he crossed the start finish line Nick's engine would fail with a plume of smoke coming from his car. He would pull off into retirement. Mark was now in ninth. Ralf was attacking Massa for sixth. Michael was also challenging Button for third, just 1.7 seconds behind the BAR. Lap forty six and Ralf would pit. Even though he had put his car into the garage the BAR team would fix Sato's car allowing him to return to the track to give him a better qualifying start in the USA GP.

But it would all go wrong for team-mate Button as he would hit the wall at the chicane ending his race. Lap forty eight and Kimi would pit as the safety car was brought out. Michael would also pit joined by Trulli. Massa and Webber would also pit. Jenson would hit the kerb and it would send his car into the wall. Lap
fifty and Montoya would pit giving Kimi track advantage. Lap fifty and Kimi was leading from Montoya, Michael Schumacher, Trulli, Webber, Massa, Barrichello, and Ralf Schumacher. Montoya's return to the track was been investigated as he went past the Red Bull of Coulthard as he returned to the track.

WebberThe race would restart on lap fifty two, but Montoya would be blacked flagged not for his pass but for returning to the track while the red light was showing on the pit lane. Montoya would pit and would get out of his car. Lap fifty three and Kimi was leading from Michael, Trulli, Barrichello, Massa, and Mark Webber. Michael was closing in onto Kimi been just 2.8 seconds behind on lap fifty four. He would continue to close in onto the McLaren. Mark was challenging Massa for fifth with just thirteen laps remaining. Kimi was able to pull out a small advantage over Michael with his lead now 2.3 seconds. This would grow out to be 2.7 seconds on lap sixty one.

Mark was still in a safe sixth position looing to get past Massa. There would be another retirement as Trulli would slow and pull off at the end of the pitlane. He would suffer brake failure. This would give us two Ferrari's on the podium with Rubens now in third. Mark was now in fifth while Michael was attacking Kimi for the lead with six laps left in the race. Both Red Bull's were now in the points with Coulthard and Klein in seventh and eighth. Sato would "retire" for the second time with a failure in his car.

Three laps remaining and Michael was 1.5 seconds behind Kimi. This would grow out to be 1.9 seconds on lap sixth eight. With one to go Kimi had Michael still close behind but he would keep the Ferrari behind to take the chequered flag to take his third win of the season. Michael was second, Rubens third, Massa fourth, Mark fifth, Ralf sixth, and the Red Bull's of Coulthard seventh and eighth.
