For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team the second Friday practice session at the Hockenheimring
would again see the pair of Webber and Heidfeld to set competitive times.
They
would finish outside the top ten with Mark and Nick finishing the session in
fourteenth and fifteenth positions. Looking at these times in Germany going
to be a repeat of France and Britain where the team struggled all weekend?
With McLaren's
Alex Wurz fastest in Friday morning's practice the teams would
commence the second practice session at Hockenheim. Neither Renault had set
a time in the first session so it would be interesting to see what pace they
have compared to the McLaren's.
With the start of the session Friday drivers Alex Wurz and Ricardo Zonta
would take to the track. This pair would be joined by twelve other drivers,
including Montoya, Liuzzi, Raikkonen, the Jordan's of Karthikeyan and Monteiro,
Doornbos, and the Renault of Fisichella. Wurz would go to the top of the
times with a 1m:18.770, with Zonta and Liuzzi second and third. Following
these drivers came Villeneuve, Doornbos, Karthikeyan, Monteiro, and
Fisichella.
Kimi would beat his team-mates time with a lap of 1m:16.216. He would
improve this with a 1m:15.815. In third would now be Montoya with a 1m:17.303. It
looked like on their early runs the Renault's were finding it difficult to match
the pace of the McLaren's. Zonta was now in third with a 1m:16.873. With ten
minutes of the session run Wurz would move close to Kimi's time with a lap
of 1m:16.054.
In fifth was BAR's Jenson Button with a time of 1m:17.371. The top ten was
now Wurz, Zonta, Liuzzi, Montoya, Button, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Alonso,
and Fisichella. Button would move ahead of Juan Pablo with a lap of
1m:17.283. With fifteen minutes of the session run the two WilliamsF1
drivers would move into the top ten now with Mark Webber in seventh and Nick
Heidfeld in eighth. Nick would improve to now be in sixth. But as the
session progressed both Mark and Nick would slip down the times.
Alonso would start to quicken his pace with a lap of 1m:16.653 to now be in
third. He would improve on this with a time of 1m:16.408. Team-mate
Fisichella would move ahead of his team-mate with a time of 1m:16.407. But with the
battle between McLaren and Renault hotting up Montoya would again move into third
with a time of 1m:16.099. But Wurz would leave everyone behind him when he
would set a blistering time of 1m:13.973 to firmly take control of the top
spot.
For Red Bull's David Coulthard it would all go wrong when he left the track
at Turn 12 and put his car into the gravel ending his session. Michael
Schumacher would set a time of 1m:16.914 to be in eighth. Alonso would move ahead of
Fisichella with a time of 1m:16.255, but he was still a considerable margin
behind the McLaren's. With thirty minutes of the session remaining the order
was Wurz from Raikkonen, Alonso, Montoya, Fisichella, Zonta, Barrichello,
Michael Schumacher, and Sato.
Sauber's Felipe Massa would move into fifth with a 1m:16.161. Both Raikkonen
and Montoya were out and Kimi would set a time of 1m:14.567 to see him still
in second. Juan Pablo would improve his time with a 1m:15.772 to be in
third. Alonso would respond taking third back from the McLaren driver with a
1m:15.560. Team-mate Fisichella was in fifth with a 1m:16.146.
With fifteen minutes of the session remaining the Toyota's of Jarno Trulli
and Ralf Schumacher were in eighth and seventeenth positions. As the session
wound down there was a lull in the action as drivers made ready for the
final runs. Liuzzi was in eighth, while Massa was in seventh. Team-mate
Villeneuve was outside the top ten. With the end of the session we would see
Mark and Nick in fourteenth and fifteenth positions. Both BAR drivers were
also struggling with Button and Sato in thirteenth and eighteenth. |
