Practice for the
Turkish Grand Prix would see Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld
finish in seventh and thirteenth positions. For Nick he should have gone
better had it not been for a spin late in the final practice session. Now it was
down to qualifying and mark and Nick would run in the third group of five
drivers. The first driver out would be Red Bull's David Coulthard. He would be
followed by Klein, Doornbos, Montoya, and Villeneuve. The session would be run with
track temperatures at 43 degrees Celsius.
Coulthard would start his lap and would set a time of 33.6 in the first
sector, 31.8 in the second, to finish with a time of 1m:29.764. Running first
certainly was a big disadvantage at this new circuit. Team-mate Klein was next out and
the Austrian was two tenths up after sector one. He would follow this with
another seven tenths in the second. Christian would finish with a time of
1m:28.963 to go fastest by 0.801 seconds. But his time was also very slow.
Now for the first of the Minardi's. Doornbos would start his lap and despite
setting his personal best in the first two sectors would abort his lap
returning to the pit lane with flames coming from his rear brakes. This will
see him start from the ear of the grid. Next was Montoya and the McLaren
driver was easily quickest in all the sectors to go fastest with a time of
1m:27.352, 1.611 seconds ahead of second places Klein. But Juan Pablo's time was a
considerable margin slower than the times he had achieved in practice.
The final driver in the first group was Villeneuve. For the Canadian his lap
would go all wrong at the difficult Turn eight when he was to spin his car
stalling it in the process. He will also start from the rear of the grid.
red flags would be shown while Jacque's car was moved out of the way. The next
driver would be the first in the second group Christijan Albers. The circuit
would return to green. Following Albers was Massa, Monteiro, Karthikeyan,
and Alonso.
The Minardi would start its flying lap and was two seconds down after just
the first sector. The rest of his lap was not much better as he would finish
with a time of 1m:32.186 to be 4.834 seconds behind Montoya's time.
The second
Sauber of Massa would start its lap and would finish with a time of
1m:28.419 to move into second. Next would be the Jordan pair. Monteiro was
first out and he would be a second down after the first sector. He would
finish with a time of 1m:30.710 to finish in fifth ahead of Albers.
Team-mate Karthikeyan would choose not to complete his qualifying lap. He
had an engine change so was going to suffer a ten grid position penalty
which would see him start from the rear of the grid. The final driver of
this group was Alonso. Fernando would go fastest in the first sector. He would again be
fastest in the second, four tenths up on Montoya. He would finish his lap
with a time of 1m:27.050 to take provisional pole by 0.302 seconds. The order was
Alonso followed by Montoya, Massa, Klien, Coulthard, Monteiro, Albers,
Doornbos, Villeneuve and Karthikeyan.
The third group would see Barrichello first out followed by Fisichella,
Sato, Webber, and Heidfeld. Rubens would start his lap and was seven tenths down
after the first sector. He would lose another second in the second sector.
He would finish with a time of 1m:29.369 to be in fifth behind Klein. His time
was 2.319 seconds slower than Alonso. The Ferrari's continued to suffer a
difficult weekend. The second Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella was next out and the
Italian was able to set a time ahead of his team-mates, 1m:27.039, to take
provisional pole by just 0.011 seconds.
After a strong practice from the BAR team Takuma Sato would start his lap
and was only able to finish with a time of 1m:30.175 to see him in eighth after
having problems at Turn eight. Now it was the first of the BMW WilliamsF1
drivers, Mark Webber. Mark was just a tenth off Fisichella after sector one.
He would lose a few tenths in the second. But he would be balked by a slowing
Sato seeing him finish with a time of 1m:27.944 to move into fourth. Mark
was angry about the failure of the BAR team to notify their driver as to his
position on the track. Nick
would start his lap and was two tenths down after sector one. He would be four
tenths down after sector two. Nick would finish his lap with a time that would see
him ahead of Mark, 1m:27.929. It may be that Nick was carrying less fuel than
Mark.
The final group of five was Button, Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Michael
Schumacher, and Raikkonen. It was confirmed that the incident with Sato was
to be investigated by the stewards. After a strong showing in practice
Button would start his lap and was fastest in the first sector. But he would lose a
massive amount of time in the second, 2.6 seconds, to finish with a time of
1m:30.063 to be only in tenth. He would lose his time at Turn eight when he
went off the track briefly.
Now it was Trulli's turn. The Toyota driver was close to Fisichella's time
after sector one. But he would lose time in the final sector to finish his
lap in fourth position, a 1m:27.501. The second Toyota of Ralf Schumacher was
next out and he would be close to Fisichella's time after sector one. But in
the second sector he would lose a whole second. Ralf would finish with a time of
1m:28.594 to be in eighth. He would lose his time in Turn nine. Nick and
Mark were in fifth and sixth.
Michael Schumacher was next out. He would suffer the same fate as his
brother running wide at Turn nine and would fail to finish his lap after
aborting it. Kimi would start his lap and was fastest in the first sector. he would be
fastest in the second despite running slightly wide at Turn eight. he would
finish with a time of 1m:26.797 to take pole ahead of the two Renault's.
