Second Friday Belgian practice washed out
Pizzonia

Such were the conditions, with heavy rain, that no times were set in second Friday Belgian practice. Liuzzi would go out early but in the difficult conditions he would crash his car into the barriers without having completed a lap. After this no drivers would make an attempt to set a time.

With Kimi
Raikkonen fastest in the first practice session at Spa the second
session would get under way. The session would again be affected by heavy
rain. As for McLaren team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya the reason why he did not come
out in the first session was due to an engine problem. Juan Pablo's engine
was changed without penalty as he had not gone out onto the track. It was also
announced that Fisichella would also require an engine change but his would
be done on Friday evening prior to Saturday practice.
The first driver to come out would be Red Bull's Vitantonio Liuzzi. But it
would go all wrong for him when he would lose control of his car going down
the long straight putting it into the barrier. The session would be red flagged
as they removed his damaged car. Liuzzi was to lose control of his car about 50
metres before the Les Combes corner.
The car would turn right sending him
into the barrier. Luizzi was not injured in the crash.
The session would restart but no driver would take to the track. The only
other driver to have come out was Minardi's Robert Doornbos. Alonso, after not
having set a time in the earlier session, would come out to complete an
installation lap. But it was a lap that was completed at a snails pace such were the
conditions. With forty minutes of the session remaining no times had been
set.
Such were the conditions it was not very surprising that the drivers would
not come out in the session. As session wound down, twenty minutes remaining,
there would still not be any further activity on the track. It was
understandable why the drivers were so cautious as Spa is a demanding
circuit in the dry, add in a rain shower and it can become very unforgiving
just as Liuzzi.
With just fifteen minutes left and the heavy rain still falling there was
still no indication that any times would be set in the session. There would
be activity in the pits with engines been tested by mechanics but the
session would come to an end with no times been set. |
