For the WilliamsF1 team the Australian Grand Prix it would be another double retirement with Nico having his rear wing removed in another drivers accident, no fault on Nico's part, and Mark would suffer a gearbox related problem that would cause his retirement.

WebberWith Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg starting from seventh and fifteenth grid positions the cars would move away on their formation lap for the fifty eight lap Australian Grand Prix. Over the Honda radio there would be a call reminding
Barrichello that Rosberg was just ahead and is pretty hot headed, nearly taking off his team-mate in the last race. Moving into the grid Montoya would spin his car while he was trying to get heat into his tyres.
The race start would be aborted and the cars would be sent out on another formation lap. Fisichella would be left on the grid after having stalled his car. Fisichella would have to start the race from the rear. Mark would now have one less drivers to contend with. Montoya would rejoin in his fifth place, to the displeasure of many.

With Button on pole the red lights would go off and the cars would head down to Turn one. A great start from Button with Alonso second. Mark was following Ralf. Trulli would hit Coulthard. Raikkonen and Montoya were in third and fourth. The safety car would be brought out due to a crash involving Massa at Turn one. ralf would also spin. Rosberg would come into the pits with no rear wing. There was a small fire on his car and he would jump out quickly. Nico was involved in an incident involving Klien and Massa.

RosbergNico just happened to be in the wrong place when he got involved in Massa's accident. Fisichella was at the rear of the grid after spinning at Turn one. Trulli would also retire after his collision with Coulthard. Mark was running in fifth. With the restart Alonso would pass Button and Kimi was attacking Button. Mark was now in fourth but been attacked by Montoya. Juan Pablo would get past while Klien would retire in a big crash that would remove the left side of his car at Turn nine. Lap four and Alonso would set a quickest lap, 1m:32.669. Fernando had passed Button going into Turn one. Lap six and Alonso was 3.7 seconds ahead of Button.

With Klien's accident the safety car would come out to allow the circuit to be cleaned at the site of Klien's accident. This would close the field back up again. Mark was 7.9 seconds behind the leader prior to the safety car. Lap eight and Alonso lead from Button, Raikkonen, Montoya, Webber, Ralf Schumacher, Heidfeld, and Michael Schumacher.

With the safety car periods this would alter the teams strategies. The race would restart and Button would be passed by Kimi at Turn one. Montoya would attack Button. Alonso would pull out at the front.

Of his accident Nico said "Massa came flying over my rear wing." A fastest lap for Alonso, 1m:29.966, on lap ten. The next lap it would be Kimi who would ste the fastest lap, 1m:27.952. Fourth to sixth were running close together. Michael Schumacher was struggling in ninth, running n the order of a Torro Rosso
sandwich.

Lap twelve and Kimi would set a new fastest lap, 1m:27.577. He was 1.9 seconds behind Alonso. mark was still in fifth. Button, in third, was 10.0 seconds behind Alonso. Lap thirteen would be a slow one from Kimi, 1m:29.610, with Alonso now 4.1 seconds ahead of Kimi as they started lap fourteen. Seventh and eighth were Heidfeld and Liuzzi. Sato was running ahead of 'works' Honda driver Barrichello.

WebberLap sixteen and Alonso was now 6.7 seconds ahead of Kimi. Montoya was just 0.6 behind Button. Mark was 2.4 seconds behind the McLaren. Michael would lock up into Turn one flat spotting his tyre. Fisichella was in tenth. Ralf was in sixth behind Mark. Another fastest lap for Alonso on lap seventeenth, 1m:26.999. He would lower that with a 1m:26.902 the next lap. Montoya would pit on lap nineteen from fourth. He would come back out in tenth. This seemed to indicate a two stop strategy.

Mark was now in fourth. Button and Ralf would pit on lap twenty. Button would get a wing adjustment. Fisichella would pit, while Mark was now in third. Montoya was now ahead of Button. Alonso would pit on lpap twenty. Alonso was told to remember the white lines. Kimi was now leading from Mark. Alonso was in third with Heidfeld fourth. Lap twenty one and Kimi would pit. Mark was leading and been told to push.

Mark was leading with Alonso now second. Mark was still out was leading Alonso by 4.0 seconds. Albers would pit. There would be a radio message from Mark that he may have lost the clutch and would slow down to retire. Another disappointing race for the WilliamsF1 team. Ralf would get a drive through penalty. Heidfeld was now in second and team-mate Villeneuve seventh. Lap twenty five and Speed would pit from seventh. The next lap
and Nick would pit joined by Michael Schumacher. Alonso was leading from Kimi, Montoya, and Button.

RosbergWhen questioned over his retirement Mark said: "Gearbox or something. You have to take the rough with the smooth. We were not prepared enough. We were heavy in qualifying .... but you have to get to get the end to get a good result." Heidfeld would come back out in fourth pushing Button down to fifth. Villeneuve was in seventh. Alonso was seventeen seconds ahead of Kimi. Michael, in sixth, was closing in onto Button. Michael would slip off the track at Turn fourteen and Turn one as he pushed hard to close in on Button. Rubens would make his first pit stop.

Montoya would start to close in onto his team-mate. Alonso was now 23.3 seconds ahead of Kimi. Lap thirty two was a very slow one for Kimi, 1m:29.288. Fisichella was been told that he could not be two seconds lower than Alonso. Michael Schumacher would crash into the wall at Turn sixteen, the corner leading onto the start/finish straight. Michael's car would end up on the right hand side of the circuit.

The safety car was again out and Villeneuve would pit, joined by Alonso and
Raikkonen. Kimi would take on a new front wing. This would force Montoya to wait behind Kimi in the pit lane. Michael would understeer off the track and bounce over the kerb sending him into the wall. Just about every other driver would also pit under the safety car. Alonso was leading from Heidfeld, Raikkonen, Button, Ralf, Montoya, Fisichella, and Villeneuve.

Michael's car was put onto the back of a truck to be returned to the pits. The safety car would come in and he was gone at the start leaving the rest of the field way behind him. There was contact between Button and Montoya. The safety car would be called out again after Liuzzi crashed his car. This was turning out to be a very expensive weekend. There was a large amount of debris on the track as a result of Liuzzi's accident. Liuzzi was lucky not to hit Villeneuve as he came across the track.

The order was Alonso, Raikkonen, Ralf, Heidfeld, Montoya, and Button. But was Nick passed after the safety car was deployed. With eighteen laps remaining the race would restart. Alonso was again able to pull out a big lead at the restart. Second placed Kimi was stuck behind a MF1 car. Button was been attacked by seventh placed Fisichella. Lap forty one and Alonso was 5.1 seconds ahead of Kimi. Button was struggling. Ralf was in third. Monteiro would retire his MF1 on lap forty three.

WebberFisichella must have got the message from his engineer as he pushed to look at passing Button. Lap forty seven and Montoya would have a big moment coming onto the start/finish straight. He would slow and pull over to the right hand side of the track. He would get out and walk back to his engineer to explain what happened. When it happened his rear light came on possibly indicating that the pit lane limiter had come on. Montoya said "the cars just shut of completely".

The order was now Alonso, Raikkonen, Ralf, Heidfeld, Button, Fisichella,
Villeneuve, and Barrichello. On lap forty eight Alonso was 7.2 seconds ahead of the second placed McLaren. Lap forty nine and it would be a fastest lap for Alonso, 1m:26.189. As the laps counted down the gaps between the top eight did not allow for any place changes.

Alonso was now 9.9 seconds ahead of Kimi on lap fifty one. With five laps to go Kimi had closed the gap to Alonso. Fisichella was attacking Button for fifth. Lap fifty four and Kimi was now only 7.1 seconds behind Alonso. The next lap and it was down to 5.7 seconds. But with only two laps remaining Alonso was able to control the race. Fisichella was not able to pass Button. So with the end of the race Alonso would cross the line to win in Australia. Kimi was second, and Ralf third. Heidfeld was fourth followed by Fisichella, Villeneuve, Barrichello and Speed.

For Button his race would come to a spectacular end as his engine failed within sight of the finish. Flames would come out the rear of his car as he came onto the finish straight. Alonso was able to take victory by just 1.8 seconds.
