Norbert Haug has laughed off suggestions that the Monte Carlo victory showed that Lewis Hamilton should forget about winning and stick to helping his team mate.

McLaren were savaged by the British Press, mainly from the quarters that are known to be ‘Soccer Papers, for preventing Lewis from winning his maiden grand prix.

But Nobert Haug has made it crystal clear that the team allows both drivers to race freely.

Speaking to the Express paper, Haug insisted that protecting Fernando Alonso winning chances will not become a trend, as both drivers within the team are free to race.

"If you drive for us, you are free to race," Haug said.

"We would be the happiest out of everyone if Lewis wins," the German added, ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Team boss Ron Dennis, too, insists that what happened in Monte Carlo, was simply a 'one off' that required a more restrictive strategy.

"We will never favour one driver, no matter who it is, we never have, we never will," he said.

"If you are a member of this Grand Prix team, there is equal opportunity for drivers to race, the vast majority of the time. But Monaco is not one of them."
