Bernie Ecclestone believes that the Rubens Barrichello win at Indianapolis was the result of a cock-up by Michael Schumacher. Bernie was impressed with the race and was happy with the finish as it generated plenty of interest in the media. But he feels Michael should not have been the one to cover up his error and he should have passed the buck to Rubens.

"I don't think for one minute Michael wanted to hand the win to Rubens. But he did want both of them to cross the line almost side by side like they do at Le Mans. That's why Michael was shocked to see Rubens go by. The trouble is that Michael is not very streetwise and just confused the issue by trying to explain what happened. What he should have said at the post-race Press conference was: 'I don't know if Rubens misjudged things or he screwed me.'"

"He should then let Rubens try to talk his way out of it."

What Bernie is saying is maybe right, but Michael is more of a team player than to make his team mate face such questions. It was a mistake nothing could be done about it, Rubens could not have let Michael take the top spot on the podium (remember Austria) so it was nice that Michael and Rubens worked out a nice story. It also makes the comments in the British media about Ferrari rigging races very silly again.
