46th Pole for MS

Ferrari will start from 1st and 2nd for the 2002 Spanish Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher took the pole position ahead of Rubens Barrichello in a session that was a mirror image of that a fortnight ago in Imola. After dominating the earlier free practice sessions Ferrari were looking strong to secure very good positions on the grid for Sunday's race. As usual the drivers would have a total of 12 laps and an hour of time to set their fastest lap and determine their starting order. The F2002 and Bridgestone are working well on the Barcelona circuit and Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher look set to battle it out at the front for the pole position.

It was some 30 minutes into the session before the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello left the pit lane to begin his qualifying session and he began with a lap of stunning pace and took the provisional pole position away from the Williams of Ralf Schumacher with a brilliant lap of 1m 16.993 seconds. Michael Schumacher was soon to follow the Brazilian onto the but for the German he was so far unable to match the pace of Rubens although he moved the no1 Ferrari into position 2.

The second run for the day for the Ferrari boys so no change to the positions at the top as Barrichello continued to look the fastest man on this circuit as he looked destined to improve his lap times even further, Michael Schumacher'' second run also saw no change to his second place and once again he failed to match the stunning pace of Rubens. Schumacher's best lap of 1.17.190 is still good but he has pace to find if he is to beat Rubens to the pole position, once again Ferrari are dominating the qualifying session with this session being a very much mirror image of qualifying at Imola.

Third and final runs of the hour long session for the Ferrari duo had both cars out on track in the final moments of the session. Schumacher has made some minor changes to his front and rear wing as he looks to get closer and even beat Rubens Barrichello. Barrichello is flying once more on his final run and is up on his best at split 1, split 2 arrives and the Brazilian is still improving and looking really smooth and he crosses the line with a 1.16.690. But Schumacher is on it behind Rubens and he is faster at split 1, and the German continues with a faster time at split 2, and 1.16.364 at the line and pole position once again for Schumacher and once again Barrichello's sees his pole time beaten in the final moments.

A great session for Ferrari and once again they make the front row belonging to them, with Rubens once again setting the early pace only to see his dream of pole ruined by a flying Schumacher in the final moments, but the race looks great for Ferrari as the no1 and no2 red cars will battle it out for the race win.
