Michael Schumacher is quickest in 1’11”072, ahead of his Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro team-mate Rubens Barrichello, the Brazilian having lapped in 1’11”280. Behind them comes the two Saubers, running their usual Ferrari engines, with some modifications introduced for this race. Felipe Massa is third in 1’12”013 with Nick Heidfeld next in 1’12”023.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of this morning is the strong showing from the Jordan duo in fifth and sixth places, Giancarlo Fisichella (1’12”193) ahead of Takuma Sato (1’12”569.)

While this morning’s times mean little, it is interesting to note that McLaren-Mercedes and BMW-Williams are further down the order than expected. David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen are seventh and sixteenth while Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya are eleventh and twelfth.

Michael Schumacher completed 16 laps, one more than Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian spun off the track into the gravel, without hitting anything, in the last minute of the session. The engine cut out and the car was brought back to the pits and will be available for this afternoon’s session. Both drivers concentrated on set up, making adjustments after their first runs.
