The Williams Martini team would continue their Barcelona test with Valtteri Bottas compelting 134 laps in the day. The new FW38 was showing good reliability on a day that saw the team again focus on aero and chassis setup work, rather than outright performance. He would finish 7th in the times from the day, not that this showed much in terms of relative performance of the new FW38 compared to the other cars.
Barcelona Test
23:02:2016 Day Two
Driver: Valtteri
Bottas
Chassis / Engine: FW38-02 / PU106C Hybrid
Location: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, 4.655km
Weather: Warm and Dry
Maximum air & track temps: 20șC / 27șC
For Williams Martini Valtteri Bottas would again be behind the wheel as the
second day of their Barcelona test got underway. Valtteri would complete an
installation lap prior to pitting while quickest at this early stage was
Rosberg with a 1m:29.925 followed by a 1m:26.263. Valtteri would return to
the track and would set a 1m:27.427 to be second, running on medium tyres.
Valtteri would improve with a 1m:26.846 and then would pit having completed
just six laps. Perez would move to the top of the times with a 1m:25.835,
but Rosberg would reverse this with a 1m:25.479.
Valtteri would return to the track but with close to two hours of the
session completed he had only completed thirteen laps. But Valtteri was able
to find some small improvements setting a 1m:26.754 followed by a 1m:26.501
prior to pitting. Ricciardo had gone quickest with a 1m:25.223. Vettel would
set a 1m:24.940 which was 0.001 off his day one time. On his next run
Valtteri would set a 1m:25.872 but his run would be stopped by a red flag as
the Torro Rosso of Verstappen stopped out on the track. Valtteri would pit
having completed thirty five laps.
With the restart of the session Rosberg would set a 1m:24.867 to be
quickest. Valtteri would also return to the track currently fifth. For the
first time the super soft tyre would make an appearance seeing Ricciardo
goes quickest with a 1m:24.298. Also out on the super soft tyre was Vettel
who would set a 1m:23.658 to be quickest. For Williams Valtteri had only run
on the medium tyre while those around them moved onto the soft and supersoft
tyre. Ricciardo was now on the new ultrasoft tyre, joined by Vettel. Vettel
would set a 1m:22.810 to again be quickest as the morning session came to a
stop. Valtteri had completed fifty six laps at the lunch break.
With the start of the afternoon session it would not take long before the
second red flag would come out with the Renault of Palmer stopping out on
the track. With the restart Valtteri would take to the track this time
running on the soft tyre. This would be followed by a long run on the hard
tyre. On this tyre Valtteri would lap in the 1m:31s. His next run on the
soft tyre would see Valtteri set his best time with a 1m:25.648. Valtteri
had pitted and would return to the track only to see a red flag caused by
Vettel's stopped Ferrari. With the stop Valtteri had complete one hundred
and thirty four laps, showing reliability with the FW38. The session would
not be restarted so Valtteri would finish in seventh.
Rod Nelson, Chief Test & Support Engineer:
It has been quite a positive day for us. We were aiming for some longer runs
and reliability work. We also did some aero work and quite a lot of chassis
work. It has been an interesting day for all the engineers and the driver. I
am looking forward to Felipe getting in the car for the first time tomorrow
to get a different point of view. We are all working hard and it has been a
good day.
Valtteri Bottas:
We completed the whole programme we had for today, so that is always good.
Everyone in the garage has been working very hard. I am pleased with the
amount of laps we did today, with the mileage and reliability that we
already have in the car. Like yesterday, we are just going through our
programme and not focussing on the performance yet, so there is still a
question mark as to where we are compared to the other teams. I think it
will be interesting to follow what things Felipe is going to try with the
car. Im looking forward to next week now as well, to get back in the car
and try to get a bit more out of it.
