After a difficult first practice session the Williams Martini team would find the second Friday practice session for the 2017 British GP less eventful. The session would see Felipe Massa finish in 8th while team-mate Lance Stroll was down in 15th. Felipe would spin late in the session and would also have a bit of a coming together with Verstappen but neither moment hindered his running. For Lance his pace was again someway off the pace of his team-mate but it is early in the weekend. The same could be said of Felipe.
Williams
Martini British GP Friday 2nd Practice
Team Summary:
After having a problematic first practice session for the 2017 British Grand
Prix with both Williams cars needing repairs the Williams Martini would now
have the opportunity to get their day back on schedule with the second
Friday practice session. With the start of the session the first time would
come from Hulkenberg with a 1m:32.211 running on the soft tyre. The track
started to get busier with Vandoorne setting a 1m:31.263 to be quickest
followed by Hulkenberg and Palmer. Alonso would go quickest with a 1m:30.959
but Felipe would go ahead with a 1m:30.838. But Vettel would go ahead with a
1m:30.320. Ocon was now second while at the front Raikkonen would go
quickest but Ricciardo would move ahead with a 1m:30.148.
Vettel was now fastest with a 1m:29.850 from Ricciardo and Raikkonen.
Drivers would start to improve with Raikkonen now quickest with a 1m:29.161
but Hamilton would go ahead with a 1m:28.780. Bottas was now fifth running
on the medium tyre. Hamilton would improve with a 1m:28.543. The track would
go quite but Alonso was still running and would go fifth running on the
super soft tyre. An hour remaining and we started to see a few drivers
coming out for super soft runs. Bottas was one of these and would finish
with a 1m:28.496 to go quickest. Hamilton and Vettel were also out on the
option tyre. Vettel would go third but Raikkonen would move ahead. Hamilton
would make a mistake ruining his quick lap running wide and going over the
kerb possibly damaging his car.
Forty five minutes into the session and the order was Bottas, Hamilton,
Raikkonen, Vettel, Ricciardo, Felipe, Alonso, Verstappen, Ocon and Perez
tenth. Verstappen would improve to be fifth going ahead of Ricciardo.
Hulkenberg was now eighth behind Felipe. Williams Paddy Lowe would say:
"It’s looking good so far, it’s a bit early, but we’ll see. It only matters
on Saturday and Sunday." Hulkenberg would move ahead of Felipe to be
seventh. The Williams team had both drivers out on the track with thirty
minutes remaining with one of the soft tyre and the other the super soft.
Felipe would switch back to the soft tyre after a spin. With longer runs on
both the soft and super soft tyres amongst the teams little was changing in
terms of times.
The session would end with the drivers completing their practices starts on
the grid. For the Williams team Felipe and Lance would finish the session in
eighth and fifteenth, with a considerable margin separating the pair. But
both Williams cars were a huge margin off the quickest times been set by the
Mercedes cars. It will come down to what improvements the Williams team can
make in their cars overnight.
Felipe Massa:
Felipe would take to the track a bit over five minutes into the session. He
was running on new soft tyres and he would set a 1m:30.838 to go quickest if
only briefly. He would drop to third behind Ocon. This would become fifth
but a 1m:30.321 would see him move up to fourth behind Vettel. He was 0.471
behind the leader. He would drop to sixth and would pit with fifteen minutes
of the session completed. He would drop to seventh as he waited in his pit.
With fifty five minutes remaining Felipe would return running on the super
soft tyre for the first time. Felipe was on a quicker lap and would set a
1m:30.006 seeing him sixth which was not a big improvement. He was 1.5
seconds off the quickest time. Felipe would pit after a short four lap run.
With forty minutes remaining Felipe was now eighth.
Thirty five minutes remaining and Felipe was back out if only for one lap.
He would again come back out running on the used super soft tyres. While on
his run Felipe would spin at Becketts but was able to continue. "I just lost
the rear," said Felipe. Felipe would pi and would switch to the soft tyre
for a longer run as the session drew to a close. He would have a moment with
Verstappen with the pair trying to use the same piece of road at the final
corner. Felipe would finish the session in eighth.
Lance Stroll:
Shortly after Felipe Lance would come out also on the soft tyre. Lance would
set a 1m:31.695 to be seventh dropping to tenth. He would improve with a
1m:31.449 but was now fourteenth. He would continue to lap the circuit but
would pit after a nine lap run. He had been able to improve with a 1m:31.257
to be thirteenth. Lance would join his team-mate also on the super soft
tyre. Lance would set a 1m:30.695 to be eleventh but was over two seconds
off the quickest time of Bottas. He would be 0.689 behind his team-mate.
Lance would continue his run on the option tyre as he dropped to twelfth.
After a seven lap lance would pit currently in fourteenth, dropping to
fifteenth. With under thirty minutes remaining Lance would return now on
used soft tyres. He was on a longer run setting times in the 1m:35s. He
would complete the session in fifteenth.
