After the final
practice Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg were in twelfth and sixteenth
positions. How qualifying would turn out for the WilliamsF1 team was still
uncertain after what has been a difficult weekend for them. But for Alonso
he was facing the fact that he was facing a two second time penalty. For
passing under the red flag it was expected that Michael Schumacher would
receive the same penalty. For both Button and Albers had engine changes so
were facing ten place grid penalties.
The
start of the fifteen minutes Q1 would see Ralf Schumacher come out first,
followed by Nico and Mark. The first of the Super Aguri's, Yamamoto, was
next out. Barrichello was next out. Monteiro was next out. The Renault team
would discuss with Alonso the time that he would have to achieve to get into
Q2. Ralf's time was to be a 1m:24.231 followed by a 1m:26.420 by Mark. Nico
was in third with a 1m:28.398. Yamamoto would go fastest with a 1m:24.016.
We now also had Trulli, Coulthard, Klien, Speed, Sato, and Button all out on
the track.
Rubens would go fastest with a 1m:23.251. Alonso was now out in what is
going to be a difficult qualifying. Ralf was now in third with Trulli
fourth. Monteiro was in fifth and Mark now in sixth. Nico was in seventh.
Pedro de la Rosa was on track. Sato was now in fifth with a 1m:24.500. On
his first lap Klien would go fastest, 1m:22.147, from team-mate Coulthard,
1m:22.152. After his engine failure in practice Button would move to the top
with a 1m:21.957 but Alonso would pass the Honda driver with a 1m:20.420
which should be enough to see him make it
into Q2. de la Rosa was now second, 1m:21.288. Raikkonen was out and on a
quick lap, going fastest with a 1m:20.080. Alonso, Button, and Coulthard had
all pitted.
Mark and Nico were in sixteenth and seventeenth with Nico still out on the
track. All the drivers were now on the track with five minutes left in the
period. Kimi was fastest from Alonso, de la Rosa, Button, Klien, Coulthard,
Liuzzi, Speed, Barrichello, and Albers. Massa was on a fast lap, fastest in
the opening two sectors. He would move to the top of the times with a
1m:19.742. Barrichello was now in fourth. Mark was back out joining Nico for
their final runs. Michael would move ahead of Massa with a 1m:19.440. Nico
was now in fourteenth and Mark in twenty second with a minute left. Mark was
able to improve to be tenth with a 1m:21.335. Nico was in seventeenth as the
period came to an end. Alonso was in third with a 1m:19.792, making it into
Q3.
Those who failed to make the cut were Liuzzi, Nico, Speed, Sato, Albers, and
Yamamoto. At the front the order was Michael from Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen,
Button, Kubica, Ralf, Barrichello, Coulthard, and de la Rosa making up the
top ten. It was confirmed that Michael also had the two second penalty so Q2
would be difficult for Alonso and Michael to make it through. With their
penalties Michael and Alonso were in thirteenth and fourteenth. Also it
would be difficult for Mark to make it into Q3. |
Q2
would start with Kubica coming out first followed by Trulli and Heidfeld.
The second Toyota of Ralf was next out. Mark Webber would also come out.
Kubica was on flying lap setting a time of 1m:20.712 to go fastest. Klien
was now out on track joined by Michael. Trulli would go fastest with a
1m:20.656. Kubica would pit. Team-mate Heidfeld would move ahead of Trulli
with a 1m:20.623. Ralf was in third with a 1m:20.685. Coulthard, Alonso,
Fisichella, de la Rosa, Button, Barrichello were all out on the track.
Mark was now in fifth with a 1m:20.922 but as Michael went fastest,
1m:19.462, this became sixth. Coulthard would push mark down to seventh.
Klien was in eighth. With seven minutes left we had Michael leading from
Heidfeld, Trulli, Ralf, and Kubica. But Fisichella would move into second
with a 1m:20.614. It was now looking good for Mark to make Q3. Button was
now in second, 1m:19.943. team-mate Barrichello would push Jenson into third
as he went faster with a 1m:19.783 to go second. De la Rosa was now in
fourth, 1m:19.991.
Alonso was down in thirteenth, 1m:22.228. Mark was in eleventh. Raikkonen
would move into second with a 1m:19.704. Massa had yet to set a time but on
his first lap he would move into second with a 1m:19.504. Alonso was in his
pit and not looking like he would return with two minutes remaining. Michael
was back out for one final attempt to make it into Q3. Mark was down in
thirteenth and was back out on the track. Alonso would also come out.
Michael would set a stunning time of 1m:18.875. Alonso would move into
second with a 1m:19.364.
But for the pair would it be
enough to see them make Q3. For Mark he was able to pull in a quick lap in
the final moments, 1m:20.047, to move into eighth and into Q3. Those failing
to make it into Q3 would be Michael and Alonso due to their time penalties,
Monteiro, Klien, Coulthard, and Heidfeld. |
With
Michael and Alonso receiving their time penalties this would move mark into
sixth and into Q3. With the start of Q3 all ten drivers would come out.
Kubica would lead them out as they go through their normal process of
burning off fuel. Button will lose ten grid places due to his engine change.
With eleven minutes left Massa was fastest from Fisichella. Ralf would move
to the top of the times with Button second but the times were not
representative of their quickest times. Nine minutes remaining and we had
yet to see the first of the pit stops. Mark was running in tenth.
The Renault mechanics were getting ready and Fisichella would pit. He would
be joined by de la Rosa, Barrichello, Massa, Button, and Mark. Kimi would
also come in with six minutes remaining. Massa would quicken his pace
running on fresh rubber. he would go fastest with a 1m:19.886. De la Rosa
was in second followed by Mark. But both Raikkonen and button would move
ahead of Mark
pushing him down to sixth. Barrichello was now in second, 1m:20.496. Massa
would pit again, joined by both Toyota's. With two minutes remaining
Barrichello, de la Rosa, Raikkonen, would all pit. Everyone was on track
looking to set their final times. Massa was leading Rubens by 0.6 seconds.
As the final seconds counted down Mark was still in sixth. He would drop to
seventh courtesy of Ralf would moved into fifth. But on his final lap Mark
would move into second but was beaten by Button and Raikkonen who would go
fastest, 1m:19.599. Mark would drop to sixth again as with the end of the
period the order was Raikkonen from Massa, Barrichello, Button, de la Rosa,
Mark, Ralf, Fisichella, Trulli, and Kubica. With Button's ten grid position
penalty Mark will start the race from fifth. |
