Williams test driver Kazuki Nakajima would finish 6th fastest in opening practice for the 2007 Australian GP. Alex Wurz was down in thirteenth in a session that saw the weather play a role with the track wet to begin with but it would dry out as the session drew to a close.

Australian GP Friday 1st Practice

The opening hour and a half Friday practice session would be run under wet conditions with rain having been falling in the morning. The Williams team would run Alex Wurz and Kazuki Nakajima, with Nico setting out this session. The drivers will be able to replace their engines at the end of the Friday practice sessions.

WurzBoth drivers would complete and installation lap and then pit. But it would take a full thirty minutes before one of the Williams drivers would set a time, with Kazuki setting a time of 1m:45.855. Only seven drivers had set a time with just under an hour remaining. Fastest at this point was Button with a time of 1m:41.647, from Alonso, Vettel, and Trulli. Kazuki would improve his time with a 1m:44.731. With forty five minutes remaining a dry line would start to appear on the circuit. Kazuki had pitted while team-mate Alex would make a return to the track.

Despite been able to change engines few drivers were taking the opportunity to complete a large number of laps. Alex's first time would see him seventh, 1m:44.645. Alonso was now fastest with a 1m:40.578. As the track dried the times would continue to improve. Alex was now in eighth despite having improved his time with a 1m:42.250. Kazuki was last with a time of 1m:44.731.

Alex would improve his time, 1m:41.407, but had dropped to eleventh. Raikkonen was now fastest, 1m:39.242 followed by Schumacher, Alonso, and rookie Lewis Hamilton. Alex had pitted while Kazuki had returned to the track. With just under half an hour remaining only a handful of drivers had yet to set a time. We had yet to see anyone run with slick tyres.

With fifteen minutes left Heidfeld was now fastest from Raikkonen and Massa. Alex was back out on the track looking to improve on his twelfth place. Kazuki was down in eighteenth. But with the variable conditions comparing times would be difficult. Alex would now move up into third with a time of 1m:38.400. As the times continued to improve Alex would drop down to sixth with just over five minutes left in the session. Kazuki was back out on the track. The first driver to change to slick was Webber who went to the top of the times with a 1m:31.661. Kazuki would improve dramatically setting a time that would see him third, 1m:31.401. Alex was now down in fifteenth such was the pace of change as everyone went out on slicks.

With just seconds remaining Alonso was now fastest from Massa, Vettel, Button, and Kazuki. Alonso was fastest by 1.493 seconds. With the end of the session Alonso was fastest from Massa and Vettel. Kazuki was in an encouraging sixth and Alex was down in thirteenth. The session would see several drivers; including Webber, Trulli, and Barrichello, have moments but all were able to get through without any major problems.

Not that a lot can be concluded as to the performance of the Williams drivers compared to the other teams but it was still encouraging to see Kazuki finish sixth in his first appearance for the team on a Grand Prix weekend.
