With the

fifteenth the teams would line up on the grid for the 58 lap 2007 Australian
Grand Prix. Massa had chosen to take an engine change an would start from
the back of the grid. At the front of the grid it was Raikkonen in pole with
Hamilton in second. Albers would start the race from the pit lane. The grid
would move away with lots of smoke coming from the Toyota of Jarno Trulli.
With the teams having two compounds to use in the race it would be
interesting to see how the strategies played out. It was expected that a two
stop strategy would be the norm.

underway. Kimi was leading from Heidfeld and Alonso. Kubica was in fifth.

them. Kimi had set another fastest lap, 1m:26.208, on lap eleven.
Albers would spin off the track and into the tyre barrier at Turn three. He
just
understeered off the track and into the barrier. Alex would start to close
up to
Coulthard in sixteenth. Nico was still in twelfth and some forty seconds
behind the leader. Fisichella and Webber were running in sixth and seventh.
Lap fifteen and Heidfeld would make the first pit stop. Nick had been using
the softer tyres and took on hard ones. Rubens had passed Button and now
Button came under attack from Massa.
Nico was now 1.1 seconds behind Kovalainen as Massa passed Button on lap
seventeen. Lap sixteen and Nico had set another personal best, 1m:28.881.
Alex was till trying to get past sixteenth placed Coulthard. Kimi was till
leading with Hamilton and Alonso second and third. Kimi would pit on lap
nineteen. He would still be on hard tyres, returning in fourth. Hamilton was
leading the race. Rubens would pit. Alonso was closing in onto Hamilton.
Fisichella would pit on lap twenty one.
Kubica would pit from third on lap twenty two. Alonso would pit the next
lap. Webber would also pit. Lap twenty three Hamilton would pit from the
lead allowing Kimi back into this position. Alonso was back behind Hamilton
as Alex was able to pass Webber for fifteenth. Lap twenty five and Ralf and
Sato would pit. On the previous lap Alex had set a personal best, 1m:28.303.
Nico was now in ninth. This would become eighth as Trulli pitted.
Lap
twenty eight and Kovalainen and Nico would pit. Nico had been able to pass
Kovalainen. Button had also pitted. Alex was attacking twelfth placed
Trulli, as Coulthard pitted. Alex had yet to pit. Massa would pit on lap
thirty, taking on a lot of fuel. Button would get a drive through penalty
for speeding in the pit lane. Speed would retire his Torro Rosso. Nico was
in eighth and challenging Ralf as Button took his penalty on lap thirty two.
Hamilton was now 17.1 seconds behind Kimi, with Alonso third. Kubica and
Heidfeld were in fourth and fifth. Fisichella was in sixth.
Alex had still yet to stop. He would finally make his top on lap thirty
four, well over half race distance. Nico was able to pass Ralf for seventh
on lap thirty seven. A great performance from the Williams driver. Kubica
was slowing and would coast into the pits to retire. Kimi has lapped Massa.
Lap thirty eight and another fastest lap from Kimi, 1m:26.172. Heidfeld had
pitted from fourth. Nico was now in sixth and Alex fifteenth. Kovalainen
would do a 360 degree spin at Turn one. Lap forty and it was another fastest
lap for Kimi, 1m:25.929. Lap forty one and a personal best from Nico,

pit on lap forty four. Alonso was leading from Kimi and Fisichella. On
replay it showed Webber spinning on the pit lane as he made his pit stop.
Lap forty five and Alonso would pit seeing Kimi back out in front but with
Hamilton third after having been held up and making a slightly slower pit
stop. Hamilton was 3.7 seconds behind Alonso. Nico was now in seventh and a
lap down. Alex was in fourteenth.
Coulthard would pit while Alex was attacking Sato. But Alex's race would
come to an end as he was involved in an accident with Coulthard. Coulthard
had made a passing attempt that was not on. Coulthard's car flew over the
top of Alex's car narrowly missing Alex's head. Coulthard's car was in the
gravel and he would retire with too much damage. Alex was able to move his
car into a safer position but he would retire. Nico was still in seventh.
Kimi was still leading by 12.2 seconds on lap fifty three. Kimi was easing
off his pace. Alonso was in second with Hamilton third. He was followed by
Heidfeld, Fisichella, Massa, Nico, and Schumacher. Coulthard did admit that
he was at fault. Nico was 22 seconds behind Massa so seventh would be the
best he could hope for. Schumacher was some 22 seconds behind Nico so the
Williams driver simply would have to bring it home for some points.
Raikkonen would complete his last lap to win the 2007 Australian Grand Prix
with Alonso second and Hamilton third. Nico came home in an excellent
seventh. Two points for the Williams team. Heidfeld was in fourth followed
by Fisichella, Massa, Nico, and Schumacher Only six cars were on the leaders
lap. It was a great shame that Alex did not make it to the finish but the
team should be encouraged by the performance of Nico.
