Qualifying for
the 2007 Malaysian Grand Prix would see the session split into three
periods. Nico and Alex had set the sixth and fourteenth fastest times in the
final practice session so there was still a question mark as to whether they
could make it onto the top ten.
With the start of the first period Albers and Trulli were first out of the
pit lane.
They would be joined by several other drivers including Nico. Alex would
also come out leaving just four cars still in their garages, both McLaren's
and BMW's. The first time would be set by Albers, 1m:38.383 followed by
Trulli, 1m:38.832. Nico would go fastest with a 1m:36.286 followed by Ralf.
Speed was now second and Button fourth. Both McLaren's weer now out on the
track.
Liuzzi
was now fastest with a 1m:36.282. Coulthard was third while Nico pitted.
Raikkonen was now fastest with a 1m:35.138 while team-mate Massa slipped
into second, 1m:35.340. Webber was now in third, 1m:35.727. Alex was down in
thirteenth with a 1m:37.326.
Hamilton was now fastest with a 1m:35.028. Both Ferrari's had pitted. Most
drivers were on the harder tyre. Alonso would put in a stunning lap with a
1m:34.942 to go fastest. So with six minutes remaining we had Alonso
followed by Hamilton, Raikkonen, Massa, Webber, Liuzzi, Nico, Coulthard,
Kovalainen, and Trulli in tenth. Alex was down in fifteenth. The BMW's had
yet to come out to set a time. They would finally come out to join only the
two Honda's on the track.
Both Toyota's would come out for a second run. Button would move into sixth,
1m:35.913. He was on the softer Bridgestone tyres, with the white line
visible in the second groove. Nico was back out hoping to improve from his
eighth. Alex was now in sixteenth and may not make it through to the next
period. Alex would drop to seventeenth. With two minutes remaining there was
a rush of drivers coming back out. Only the McLaren's and Ferrari's stayed
in their pits.
Kubica was now in fourth and Heidfeld sixth. Alex was now in eighteenth.
Nico was able to improve with a 1m:35.755 but this would only see him in
tenth. With the end of the period Alex would not make it into the second
period. So with the end of the period those failing to make the cut were
Speed, Davidson, Barrichello, Alex, Albers, and Sutil. To say that Alex's
performance was a disappointment would be an understatement. At least Nico
was able to finish in eleventh. Alex was running on the softer tyres. It
would appear that Alex had a gearbox related problem. Fastest was Alonso
from Hamilton, and Raikkonen.

Nico had set the
eleventh fastest time in period one. Given Alex's mechanical problem this
was more indicative of the pace of the FW29. It should be possible for Nico
to make it into the final period. With the start of the second period both
McLaren's would quickly take to the track. Most drivers were running with
the softer Bridgestone tyres. There weer reports of possible rain so it
would be a case of the drivers quickly setting a time.
Alonso did just that setting a time of 1m:34.057, the fastest of the
weekend.
Hamilton was in second, 1m:34.650, and Ralf third. Massa was now in second
and Raikkonen fourth. Nico was in sixth behind Trulli. Heidfeld was now in
fifth,
1m:35.261. Button was slowest with a 1m:36.174. Kubica would push his
team-mate down one place when he moved into fifth. Both McLaren's would pit.
Nico
was also in the pits leaving just Kubica out on the circuit. He would also
come in with eight minutes remaining. Nico would be told by Rob Wilson,
Chief Operations Manager, that there was the risk of rain and they want him
to go again straight away. They also upped the tyre pressures on the front.
The track was still empty but it would be Nico who would come out first.
Nico was currently in eighth. The clock was down to 4:30 minutes. Nico was
again on soft tyres. Nico would start his timed lap and would set a personal
best second sector. His time was a 1m:35.380 but he remained in eighth. Both
Toyota's were also out on the track. They would be joined by a rush of
drivers.
Only the top
five had yet to come out again. The FW29 was still about 5kph slower that
the fastest cars. Nico would pit. Had he done enough to see him into the
final period? The period would come to an end and Nico was still eighth.
Those failing to make it thorough were Kovalainen, Fisichella, Coulthard,
Sato, Button, and Liuzzi. Alonso was fastest from Massa, Hamilton,
Raikkonen, Kubica, Heidfeld, Trulli, Nico, Webber, and Schumacher. So both
Honda's and Renault's were out.
A great performance by Nico to
get his FW29 into the final period. What position would he get in the final
period? Unfortunately it would probably be outside the top six. |

The final period
would get underway with Nico the seventh driver to leave the pit
lane. Alonso was first out followed by Hamilton. Hamilton was on hard tyres,
Alonso soft. The drivers would start the process of burning of fuel as the
period still had the possibility of rain. Nico was also on soft tyres. Some
of the drivers also wanted to post a quick time early in the session in case
it rains.
Alonso was fastest with a 1m:35.741 followed by Massa, Raikkonen, Kubica,
Hamilton, Heidfeld, Trulli, Webber. Webber would pit for fresh tyres. Nico
had yet to set a time with eight minutes remaining. Nico had pitted for new
tyres. He was in line for a personal best time finishing his lap with a
1m:37.807 to be in fifth. Both McLaren's had pitted, joined by the BMW's.
Nico was now on the harder tyre which was a bit of a surprise.
Alonso was still fastest from Massa and Raikkonen. Webber was in fourth
followed by Kubica. Nico was now in sixth. Hamilton would move into fourth,
1m:36.495. Heidfeld and Kubica were in fifth and sixth. Nico was now down in
eighth. Alonso would improve with a 1m:36.682. Alonso would pit joined by
Raikkonen and Hamilton. Nico had dropped to tenth as the Toyota's improved
to be in seventh and eighth. Nico was on a quick lap with one minute
remaining. He would set personal best times in sector one and two. His lap
would see him jump into fifth with a 1m:36.829.
The period would come to an end and on his final lap Massa would snatch pole
position. Raikkonen was in third behind Alonso. Nico was in a brilliant
sixth. It was a shame that Alex had his problems but it was most likely that
he would still have struggled to make it into the top ten. So after
qualifying the order was Massa followed by Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton,
Heidfeld, Nico, Kubica, Trulli, Schumacher, and Webber. |
