With Nico Rosberg lining up at opposite ends of the grid, Nico in sixth and Alex in nineteenth, the grid would move away on its parade lap for the fifty six lap Malaysian Grand Prix. Alex suffered gearbox problems during qualifying so his pace should allow him to run considerably faster than several of the cars in front of him. But most of the hopes for a good result lay with Nico. At the front it was Massa on pole followed by Alonso and Raikkonen. Barrichello, after suffering a disaster of a weekend up to this point, would start from the pit lane after an engine change. Most drivers would start the race on the medium tyre.
The grid would form up and as the lights went out it would be Alonso leading from Hamilton. Hamilton was able to go around the outside of Massa at Turn two. Sutil was off into the gravel on lap one. Alonso was starting to pull away from Hamilton. Nico was down in seventh and Alex eighteenth. Fisichella had moved from twelfth to now be eighth. Heidfeld and Kubica were in fifth and sixth. Lap two and a fastest lap for Alonso, 1m:37.784. He was now 2.7 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Liuzzi would pit on lap three, to get a new front wing. Lap four and Alonso was now 3.7 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Nico was challenging Kubica for sixth. Massa would try to pass Hamilton at Turn 4 only to be repassed by the McLaren driver. Massa would make a mistake at Turn six and took to the grass as a result, losing places to Raikkonen and Heidfeld. At the end of lap six it was a new fastest lap for Alonso, 1m:37.365.
Raikkonen was right behind Hamilton as Alonso took advantage of this fight to pull further ahead. Alex had passed Davidson for fifteenth. Nico was still trying to pass Kubica. Alex had now passed Speed for fourteenth. He was now right behind Ralf and looking to pass. Albers would stop in his pit with an engine failure, smoke pouring from the back of the car. Both Spyker cars were out of the race. At the end of lap nine Alonso's lead was now 9.6 seconds and he also set a new fastest lap, 1m:37.309. Alex had passed Ralf and was now in thirteenth. Hamilton was now 10.2 seconds behind his team-mate. Raikkonen was in third followed by Heidfeld, Massa, and Kubica. Nico in seventh was now a comfortable 4.0 seconds ahead of eighth placed Fisichella. Lap eleven and Alonso was 0.65 seconds faster than Hamilton, 1m:37062. This again was anew fastest lap. Lap twelve and Kubica would pit. It would be a slow stop as he had problems with a rear wheel. This would see Nico now in sixth. Alex was still in thirteenth.
Lap twelve and another fastest lap for Alonso, 1m:36.961. Barrichello would pit on lap thirteen. Alex would pass Coulthard and was now in eleventh. Alex had started on the softer tyres. Lap fourteen and Alonso's lead was out to 12.6 seconds. The Ferrari's were not making any progress with Kimi stuck behind Hamilton.
Alonso would continue to set fastest lap, 1m:36.921 on lap fourteen. Alex was 2.8 seconds behind tenth placed Webber. Now it was going to get difficult for the Williams driver. Nico was 6.5 seconds behind fifth placed Massa. After his stop Kubica was down in eighteenth and struggling. Massa was right behind Heidfeld. Lap eighteen and Massa would pit from fifth. Alex, Speed and Sato would also come in. The next lap would see both Alonso and Raikkonen pit. Both Alonso and Raikkonen were on the softer tyre. Trulli and Davidson were also in for new tyres. Hamilton was now leading from Heidfeld with Alonso in third. Nico was in fourth.
Lap twenty and Nico would pit joined by Ralf. Nico would continue to use the softer tyre. Lap twenty one and Hamilton was in for his first stop. Hamilton would have a front wing adjustment. Heidfeld was now leading as Webber pitted from eighth. Button was also in. On lap twenty two Heidfeld was in and he would take on the soft tyres. Kovalainen would pit from sixth. Hamilton would set a new fastest lap, 1m:36.701, on lap twenty two. Fisichella would pit from fourth on lap twenty four. Nico was in seventh and Alex eleventh. Alonso was leading Hamilton by 11.0 seconds but Hamilton was now 0.5 seconds a lap faster than his team-mate. With twenty four laps complete the order was Alonso from Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Massa, Nico, Coulthard, and in eighth Fisichella.
Alex was 2.7 seconds behind tenth placed Kovalainen. Nico was 5.8 seconds behind Massa and not able to close the gap. Lap twenty seven and Coulthard would pit from seventh. Nico would drop away from Massa with the gap now 6.3 seconds. Lap twenty nine and Kubica would make his second stop. He would take on a new front wing. At the front Hamilton was now just 8.7 seconds behind Alonso. Alonso was to have problems with backmarkers including Liuzzi. Ralf would pit while Alex was now just 0.9 seconds behind Kovalainen. This was a strong showing from the Austrian. Alonso would respond to Hamilton and on lap thirty one his lead was 8.3 seconds. Alex continued to look to pass Kovalainen.
Nico was now 7.0 seconds behind Massa. It was looking like sixth would be the best position he could achieve. Both of the Ferrari's were now over twenty seconds from the leader. This race certainly has gotten way from them. The race was very static with only Alex looking to make up a place. On lap thirty five Alex would pit for the second time. Barrichello, Speed, and Davidson would also come in. Massa was able to move up to be right behind Heidfeld. Alex was now in twelfth. Lap thirty eight and Coulthard and Liuzzi would pit. For Coulthard his stop would see him retire in his garage.
Lap thirty nine and Hamilton would be the first of the leaders to pit. Nico would also pit from sixth. Hamilton would take on the harder tyres. Trulli had also pitted from eighth. Hamilton was down in fifth as Kovalainen took his second stop on lap forty. The next lap would see Alonso come in and take new hard tyres for his final run to the chequered flag. Sato would pit from twelfth. Massa was to pit from fifth. Raikkonen was now leading but had yet to make his second stop. He would do this on lap forty two handing the lead back to Alonso. Kimi would return in fourth. Heidfeld and Fisichella would make their second stops. Webber would be the final driver to pit.
So on lap forty three the order was Alonso from Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Massa. But it would all go terribly wrong for Nico as he was to suffer an engine failure, pulling off the circuit. He was looking to finish in sixth place and this result was a great shame for both driver and team. Alex was down in ninth but some 15.4 seconds behind eighth placed Kovalainen. At the from Alonso was 17.1 seconds ahead of Hamilton. But Kimi was closing in onto the second placed McLaren. On lap forty six Hamilton's lead was just 6.1 seconds over Kimi. The following lap it was down to 5.6 seconds. Webber was looking to pass Alex.
As the laps counted down Kimi would continue to close in onto Hamilton. By lap fifty one it was down to just 3.3 seconds. Webber continued to follow Alex but was not able to pass. Massa was also closing in onto forth placed Heidfeld. Both Renault's were in the points with Fisichella sixth and Kovalainen eighth. Alex was 17.5 seconds behind the Finn. Alonso was in a comfortable position at the front but for team-mate Hamilton Raikkonen continued to apply pressure. lap fifty two Kimi was now 2.3 seconds behind Hamilton. But would Kimi have time to make a pass on Hamilton? Lap fifty three and Hamilton's lead was down to 1.7 seconds. Heidfeld was able to pull away from Massa. Alex was now in a comfortable ninth. But this was outside the points for the Williams driver. Kimi was now 1.4 seconds behind with just two laps remaining in the race.
The final lap and Kimi was really putting Hamilton under pressure, 0.8 seconds. But fro Alonso it would be another victory as he crossed the finish line to win the 2007 Malaysian Grand Prix. Hamilton was able to hold onto his second place making it a McLaren one-two. Heidfeld was able to finish in fourth followed by Massa< Fisichella, Trulli, and the last point going to Kovalainen. Alex would finish in an excellent ninth considering he started from nineteenth. But for team-mate Nico he continues to impress despite his retirement. |
