Italian GP Saturday 2nd Practice

The BMW WilliamsF1 team continued their strong performances in practice for the Italian Grand Prix. The second Saturday session would see Juan Pablo head Ferrari's Michael Schumacher with the fastest lap of 1m:319, leading by just 0.009 seconds. Ralf would finish the session in fourth, just 0.4 behind his team-mate.

Juan Pablo MontoyaBoth BMW WilliamsF1 Team drivers would go out early in the session with Ralf beating his personal best, with a 1m:22.737 to move into fourth. Ralf would have some small changes made to his car, while Juan Pablo would continue to set quick times. The battle between Juan Pablo and Michael Schumacher would continue during the session.

Juan Pablo would have a half spin but would save the car from going off into the gravel. As the session progressed Juan Pablo and Ralf would move into second and third respectively. But for Juan Pablo the session would see him go faster than Michael Schumacher, the first driver to do so, so far this weekend. Just 0.445 slower than Juan Pablo, Ralf was in third. Both drivers would have small changes made on their cars as the session progressed. Juan Pablo would push hard during the session and on one occasion would see his lap ruined when he got off the ideal line. Ralf would also make a mistake and have to abort his lap.

So with the end of the session the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers would be in first and fourth fastest positions, which is a positive result prior to the qualifying session this afternoon. Both drivers were benefiting from their Michelin tyres working well in the warm conditions.

Ralf SchumacherIn second came Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, who again showed that he has the pace to perform well in qualifying. In third was Barrichello, who forced to wait for his Ferrari to be fixed after its engine had blown up in the first session this morning. Rubens was just one hundredth of a second quicker than Ralf.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen finished in fifth during the practice session, followed by team-mate David Coulthard. Again the Jaguar's were setting competitive times with Pedro de la Rosa in seventh, five hundredths quicker than Eddie Irvine.

Allan McNish in the fast Toyota was ninth, followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Felipe Massa, and Nick Heidfeld. Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella finished thirteenth, ahead of Mika Salo, Takuma Sato, Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli, the Italian a disappointing seventeenth in the Renault.

Jenson Button ran off the circuit and beached his car in the gravel, ending his session. Alex Yoong would finish with a 1m:24.744, beating team-mate Mark Webber by eight tenths of a second.
