If things can go wrong ....

Nico Rosberg

For the AT&T Williams team the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix was very much the case that if things can go wrong they will go wrong. Nico Rosberg would finish in a disappointing tenth after been involved in a pit lane accident while Kazuki Nakajima would crash while entering the pit lane with a damaged nose. It was a race weekend that promised so much but again failed to see either driver deliver.

 Canadian GP Race Review

With the AT&T Williams team starting the seventy lap 2008 Canadian Grand Prix from fifth and twelfth with Nico Rosberg ahead of team-mate Kazuki Nakajima. The race would start with the drivers still having concerns with the condition of the track. Repairs were made to the track but it was makeshift at best. Nico
expressed his concern saying that if you moved just centimetres off line you will be in trouble. Starting from the pit lane would be Button and Vettel, both drivers having problems with their cars.

RosbergNico would start the race on the softer tyre, joined by Hamilton. Most of the other front runners were on the harder tyre. The apex at Turn ten certainly looked less than satisfactory. With the grid formed up the lights would go out and it would be Hamilton leading from Kubica, Raikkonen, and Nico in fourth. Alonso was fifth and Massa sixth. Kazuki was in a great tenth, making up two places. Kazuki was on the harder tyre. After lap two Nico was over four seconds behind the leader Hamilton. Kazuki would run wide at Turn one but was able to continue. At the start Nico went around the outside Alonso at Turn two. With four laps run Hamilton was leading Kubica by 2.4 seconds. Nico was now over seven seconds behind the McLaren.

Heidfeld was able to pass Barrichello for eighth at Turn ten. Kovalainen was in seventh. Kazuki was still in tenth. Hamilton had set a fastest lap on lap four with a 1m:17.506. Kazuki was right behind Barrichello and looking to pass the Honda. Nico was dropping away from third placed Raikkonen, the gap was 3.5 seconds.
Fifth and sixth were Alonso and Massa. Lap nine and Nico was now eleven seconds behind Hamilton. Webber, in eleventh, was right behind Kazuki. Hamilton continued to extend his lead while Raikkonen started to close
in onto Kubica.

NakajimaKimi would set a new fastest lap on lap fourteen, 1m:17.387, as Sutil stopped his car between Turn three and four. Nico was also quickening his pace as the Safety Car was deployed on lap eighteen so that Sutil's car could be removed. The top five would all pit with the opening of the pit lane. But it would all go wrong as Hamilton and Raikkonen would crash. Nico would have his nose damaged in the accident. It appears that Kimi was waiting for a red light to change to green to let them go. Hamilton would come out the pit lane and run straight into the back of the Ferrari. Nico would run into Hamilton and was forced to do a complete lap with no nose and would pit to get a new one.

What a big mistake by Hamilton and the McLaren team that saw him crash into Raikkonen. The Safety Car would come in on lap twenty one with Heidfeld leading followed by Barrichello and Kazuki in third. Nico was now sixteenth. The Red Bull's of Webber and Coulthard were fourth and fifth. Trulli and Glock were sixth and seventh. Nico had made the same mistake as Hamilton by coming down the pit lane too fast. Lap twenty four and Heidfeld was leading by 6.8 seconds. Kazuki was right behind second placed Barrichello. But these drivers had yet to pit. Heidfeld was leading by 13.9 seconds. Piquet would spin at Turn three but was able to continue.

RosbergHeidfeld would pit on lap twenty nine. He would take on soft tyres. Webber was also in. Heidfeld would come back out in front of Kubica. We now had a Honda leading with Kazuki second. Kubica would pass Heidfeld at Turn one. Lap thirty one and Barrichello was still leading from a close following Kazuki. Raikkonen, Hamilton, and Nico were under investigation for their part in the pit lane incident. The top six cars had yet to make their first pit stop. Kazuki would pit on lap thirty four. Nico was now in eleventh while Kazuki had returned in twelfth. Coulthard would pit from the lead seeing the Toyota's with Trulli in first and Glock second were leading. But they had yet to make their first pit stop. Nico had pitted dropping him to sixteenth.

NakajimaLap thirty nine and Glock was leading from Kubica, Heidfeld, Alonso, Coulthard, Barrichello, Kovalainen, and Massa in eighth. Kazuki was in tenth. He had lost a place to Massa as he tried to pass Button. Glock would finally pit allowing Kubica to lead the race. Heidfeld was in second with Alonso third followed by Coulthard. Nico was down in fourteenth and Kazuki ninth. Alonso was attacking Heidfeld for second but would run wide at the Turn ten hairpin. At the front Kubica was two seconds a lap faster than Heidfeld. His lead was 20.7 seconds. Alonso would stop in sector two after spinning at Turn seven and hitting his right front suspension against the wall. Kazuki would pit on lap with front nose coming off. He would crash into the pit lane when the wing went under his car. He had hit the back of the Honda.

Kubica would pit on lap forty nine returning in the lead. It was looking good for a BMW one-two. Nico was down in twelfth. The Canadian Grand Prix had turned out to be a major disappointment for the AT&T Williams team. With nineteen laps remaining Massa was able to pass Barrichello and Kovalainen going into Turn ten. A great passing move by the Ferrari driver. Fisichella would spin his Force India and retire. On lap fifty four Massa and Kovalainen would pit, joined by Webber and Button. At the front the BMW's continued to lead with Kubica leading Heidfeld. Barrichello was closely been followed by Glock as they fought over fourth but Rubens would run wide allowing both Toyota's past. Nico was running in ninth behind Vettel.

NakajimaLap sixty and Kubica's lead was out to ten seconds as Nico tried to pass Vettel and as a result would see Kovalainen pass the Williams for ninth. Nico was now tenth as the final laps counted down. Massa would continue his move forward taking sixth from Barrichello on lap sixty two. He would close in onto Trulli and would take fifth on lap sixty eight. Webber would spin on lap seventy as Kubica completed his final lap to take an historic victory for the BMW Sauber team. Heidfeld would come home in second with Coulthard third followed by Glock, Massa, Trulli, Barrichello, and in the last points scoring position Vettel.

For the Williams team it was another race that started with a good chance of seeing both drivers score some valuable points. But this was not to happen and the Williams team would come away seeing their position in the Constructors championship drop to sixth behind Red Bull and Toyota. For Nico and Kazuki their races would be ruined by similar incidents in that both drivers would run into the rear of another car. Next stop is France where the Williams team can only hope to produce a better result than in Canada where they were unable to take advantage of their good showing in the lead-up to the race. Another concern to the Williams team must be the number of mistakes that are starting to creep into Nico's driving.

Good report Andrew.

It would be nice to convert form into points though.

Williams and proud of it.
