FW31 diffuser illegal? |

After the recent test at the
Algarve circuit the 2009 Williams FW31 has come under close scrutiny in
regard to its rear diffuser. Other teams are asking to clarification from
the FIA as to the design of the FW31's diffuser. The view is held that the
design of the rear bodywork of the FW31 exceeds the 175mm maximum height regulation.
When questioned by autosport.com Renault Technical Director
Pat Symonds said" "They (the diffusers) are certainly interesting, although
I don’t think I can comment on their legality.
“That’s something for the FIA to comment on. We will be asking the FIA about
it, but we haven’t yet.”
It is felt that the design that has bodywork exceeding the allowed height could give the
FW31 added downforce as part of the rear aerodynamic structure. This could
give a performance advantage. |
