The AT&T Williams team would commence their five day test at the Jerez circuit with Nico Rosberg present. The team would run their FW31 in its 2009 colours. Nico would continue with the development work on the FW31. The FW31 would run with the prominent 'skate fins' on the cockpit sides. They were first seen in photos of the car at a Williams media event.

RosbergBut despite suggestions the fins may be illegal, Technical Director Sam Michael explained: "In the area of the head restraint, the 75 millimetre radius (bodywork) rule does not apply." Michael said to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that the fins are not downforce-producing, but rather "flow aids".

The days testing would be affected by rain that would fall on the circuit mid afternoon. It was felt that the rain may have contributed to Nico brining out a red flag when he went off the circuit at Turn one. But it was also believed that Nico was forced to a halt with a mechanical problem.

Nico would finish the day with the fourth fastest time, 1m:21.171, after completing seventy one laps. Nico will return to testing on Monday for the second day of the teams test.
