After a protest from various teams and several hours of deliberation by the Stewards of the Meeting for the Australian Grand Prix they made the announcement rejecting the protest lodged by Renault, Ferrari and Red Bull and confirmed that the Williams-Toyota FW31 is technically compliant with the appropriate 2009 Formula One Technical Regulations. The matter is now under appeal.
Williams
FW31 compliant with 2009 regulations
The 2009
Australian Grand Prix would start with the issue of the legality of the
diffusers being run by the Williams, Toyota, and Brawn GP cars at the centre
of attention. Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull would lodge protests against the
legality of the rear diffusers fitted to these teams cars. This was despite
the fact that the components were originally declared legal by FIA
scrutineers ahead of the season opener.
The
stewards would consider these protests on the Thursday. If the stewards
supported the protests, Brawn, Toyota and Williams would be permitted to
race under appeal. This appeal would not be heard until after next Sunday's
Malaysian Grand Prix.
But after
several hours of deliberation the Stewards of the Meeting for the Australian
Grand Prix rejected the protest lodged by Renault, Ferrari and Red Bull and
confirmed that the Williams-Toyota FW31 is technically compliant with the
appropriate 2009 Formula One Technical Regulations.
Williams’ Technical Director Sam Michael said, ”We are pleased with the
Stewards’ decision and we have no further comment to make.”
The protesting teams have
appealed this decision which means that the results of the Australian Grand
Prix will be provisional until the appeal process can be completed.
