The final practice session for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix would see AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg set the fastest time, after setting the fastest time in both Friday sessions. Once again this session showed that the Williams FW31 certainly has the pace as the team prepares for qualifying. Nico was backed up by team-mate Kazuki Nakajima who would finish the session in an excellent fifth.

 Australian GP Saturday Practice

After a very encouraging start to the weekend the AT&T Williams team would
return to the track for the third hour long practice session. With the start of the session there would be a rush of drivers taking to the track. Both Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima were out on the track. Nico was told that he was on a race set of tyres and that he should look after them. After their installation laps both Williams drivers would pit.

RosbergWith five minutes completed only Button had yet to come out onto the track. Button would finally leave the pits running by himself. He would complete his installation lap. Both Williams drivers remained in their cars as the session counted down. With forty four minutes left Piquet would be the first driver to return to the track.

He was joined by both Ferrari's, Glock, and Alonso. Nico and Kazuki would also take to the track. Piquet would set the first time with a 1m:31.330. Glock would go faster with a 1m:31.032. Raikkonen would set a time of 1m:30.141. Alonso would set an even quicker time with a 1m:28.758. Piquet and Glock would improve. Raikkonen was second with a 1m:28.801. Nico was third with a 1m:28.953. Alonso improved with a 1m:28.471. Kazuki was down in eighth with a 1m:31.717. Heidfeld was fourth, 1m:29.213. Raikkonen would slow down and would pull off the track. It looks like he lost hydraulic pressure.

Drivers were improving with Button fastest with a 1m:27.863. Alonso was second followed by Nico, Massa, Heidfeld, Raikkonen, Kubica, Hamilton, Fisichella, and Trulli. Kazuki was down in thirteenth. Nico's time was now a 1m:28.028. Kazuki would put in a quick lap with a 1m:27.762. Nico was now second with a
1m:27.782. Barrichello was now fastest with a 1m:27.729. Hamilton was up to fifth and Alonso sixth. Vettel was in seventh. The Red Bull driver would
improve to go fastest with a 1m:27.284.

NakajimaBoth Williams drivers would pit with just over thirty minutes remaining. Sutil had yet to set a time. It was confirmed that Hamilton was running KERS. Only a handful of drivers were out on the track as we moved into the final thirty minutes. Vettel was able to improve with a 1m:27.009. Button would return to the track joining Kovalainen. Both drivers would improve with Button and Kovalainen second and third, 1m:27.068 and 1m:27.284. Sutil was up to sixteenth. Kovalainen would spin at Turn four as Button went fastest with a 1m:26.691.

Glock was now fastest in sector one. He would move into second, 1m:26.768. Barrichello was now fastest with a 1m:26.689. So we now had a Brawn GP one-two. Both Nico and Kazuki were back out with just over twenty minutes left. Sutil was now sixth, 1m:27.637. Barrichello was on the softer tyre. Rubens would improve with a 1m:26.489. The track was now very busy as Button pitted. Kazuki was now ninth and Nico tenth. Barrichello would also pit. Massa would improve with a 1m:26.698 to be third but as Trulli moved into second, 1m:26.569, this became fourth. Nico would improve with a 1m:27.545 to be ninth. Kazuki was now eleventh with a 1m:27.651. Kazuki would have a moment taking to the grass at Turn one. Massa was now third with a 1m:26.629. Vettel would take to the gravel at Turn one. With fourteen minutes remaining the order was Barrichello from Trulli, Massa, Button, Glock, Vettel, Nico, Kovalainen, Webber, and Kazuki in tenth.

RosbergNico's time was a 1m:27.277 and Kazuki a 1m:27.482. Raikkonen was slowest. Glock would improve to be second, 1m:26.521. Glock was on the softer tyre. He would improve with a 1m:26.410 to go fastest. Nico was still on the harder tyres. Nico was up to sixth with a 1m:26.893. Kazuki had pitted still in tenth. Nico would also come in with ten minutes remaining. Barrichello would return to the track running on the softer tyre. He would start his flying lap while Button also returned to the track.

Trulli and Glock were also back out. Button was now fastest with a 1m:26.184. Trulli was on a quick lap. Kovalainen was sixth, 1m:26.6652, while Barrichello was second. Trulli's lap would see him set a 1m:25.811 to go fastest as everyone was out on the practice qualifying runs. Nico was seventh with a 1m:26.893. Kazuki was now eleventh, 1m:27.582. Heidfeld was now fifth and Massa sixth. Nico was on a quick lap while Hamilton moved into eighth, 1m:26.714. Massa was now third, 1m:26.020. Nico would put in a brilliant time with a 1m:25.080. Nico's time would see him fastest in sector three.

As the final minute started Nico was fastest from Trulli, Button, and Massa. Kazuki was now fifth with a 1m:26.234. A great sign with both Williams at the front. The session would end with Nico remaining fastest. Kazuki would improve with a 1m:26.078 but remained fifth. So the final order was Nico again at the top from Trulli, Button, Massa, Kazuki, Barrichello, Webber, Glock, Kubica, and in tenth Heidfeld. Once again this session showed that the Williams FW31
certainly has the pace.
