The 2009 Spanish GP would see the AT&T Williams team come away with a single point courtesy of Nico Rosberg's 8th place finish. Kazuki Nakajima would finish in 13th. The start of the race would see a major crash involving several cars and as a result Kazuki was forced to pit on the opening lap of the race. A positive result in a weekend that again saw the Williams team struggle.

 Spanish GP Race Review

The AT&T Williams drivers would start the sixty six 2009 Spanish Grand Prix from ninth and eleventh, with Nico Rosberg leading Kazuki Nakajima. Both drivers would start the race with heavy fuel loads which it was estimated that Nico would not stop until lap twenty six. The grid would clear and the cars
would move off on their formation lap. Most drivers would start the race on the softer tyre as the grid formed up.

FW31The start would see one of the McLaren's run off the track as Barrichello took the lead into going into Turn one. There was a big accident as the cars came out of the first series of corners. There was parts of cars all over the track seeing the Safety Car come out. Involved in the accident were Trulli, Sutil, and both Torro Rosso cars. Trulli would run wide and spear back out onto the racing line seeing other cars hit the Toyota.

Nico was currently in seventh while Fisichella pitted to have his car checked and to take on fuel. Kazuki was down in twelfth but would pit as Barrichello continued to lead from Button, Massa, Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Nico, and Glock in eighth. Massa had used his KERS to get up to third at the start. The replay seemed to show that Nico had made contact with Trulli forcing the Toyota wide.

With his stop Kazuki was now down in sixteenth. The Safety Car would come in at the end of lap five. The field was bunched up as he came onto the main straight. Alonso would try to pass Webber at Turn one. Alonso would pass but Webber was able to retake the Renault onto Turn one. Lap six and Barrichello was fastest with a 1m:24.581. Hamilton would pass Piquet for thirteenth as Kovalainen slowed finally to return to his pit to retire. Barrichello was again fastest with a 1m:24.172.

RosbergButton was now fastest with a 1m:23.898 on lap eight. Nico was 2.2 seconds behind sixth placed Alonso. Trulli would confirm that he did make contact with Nico. Barrichello would respond to Button with a 1m:23.719 on lap ten. Lap eleven and Rubens was even faster with a 1m:23.334. Nico was now 11.6 seconds behind the leader. Lap thirteen and Barrichello would pull out a few tenths with a 1m:23.103 followed by a 1m:23.094 on lap thirteen. Barrichello's lead was now 1.6 seconds over Button. Massa was 3.8 seconds behind Button. Button would respond with a 1m:22.950 on lap fourteen. Raikkonen was looking to pass ninth placed Heidfeld. Nico was still seventh but running with a heavier fuel load. Nico was on a quick lap as Button sets another fastest lap with a 1m:22.899 on lap seventeen. Glock would pit on lap eighteen. He would take on the softer tyre again as Button pitted on lap nineteen.

Alonso would also pit as Raikkonen slowed and would pull off at Turn ten. Barrichello would pit on lap twenty, joined by Webber. After a short pit stop Rubens would come out in front of Nico. Massa and Vettel would pit on lap twenty one. They would come out behind Button while Nico was currently second. Barrichello was leading while team-mate Button was third followed by Massa, Vettel, Heidfeld, Kubica, and Hamilton in eighth.

NakajimaEleventh placed Piquet would pit on lap twenty two. Nico was 2.6 seconds behind Barrichello. Kazuki was in twelfth. Barrichello was told that Button had changed to a two stop strategy while he was on a three stop. Eighth placed Kubica would pit on lap twenty four. Lap twenty four and Nico would set a personal best with a 1m:23.621. Nico would pit on lap twenty six returning on the soft tyres. He would return in ninth. Lap twenty six and Barrichello was now leading by 10.5 seconds. Kazuki was now eleventh. With both Frank Williams and Patrick Head at the track the Williams team was facing the prospect of a points scoring finish from Nico. Vettel was running close behind third placed Massa. Lap twenty eight and a new fastest lap from Barrichello, 1m:22.762. Barrichello was 12.1 seconds ahead of Button. The Brawn mechanics were back out in the pit lane Fisichella would pit seeing Kazuki now in tenth.

Barrichello would pit losing the lead to Button. Fifth and eight, Heidfeld and Hamilton, would also pit. Both would stay on the softer tyres. Kazuki was up to ninth running behind of Heidfeld. Nico was now seventh and running by himself. Lap thirty three and Button was leading from Massa, Vettel, Barrichello, Webber, Alonso, Nico and Heidfeld in eighth.

RosbergAfter his early pit stop Kazuki had yet to come back in and on lap thirty four would set a personal best of 1m:24.457. Nico was 5.6 seconds behind Alonso. Kazuki would pit again on lap thirty seven. He would return in thirteenth. Barrichello was told to push as he was losing time to Button. Massa would lose
his left front wheel cover as Vettel started to push running behind the Ferrari. Lap forty four and both Massa and Vettel would pit while the next lap Alonso was in. This would see Button leading from Barrichello, Webber, Massa, Vettel, Nico, Heidfeld, and Alonso in eighth. Nico was right behind Vettel was eleventh and twelfth place Kubica and Piquet would pit on lap forty eight. Kubica was now on the harder tyre.

Glock would pit from tenth. Button would pit from the lead on lap forty nine. Barrichello was leading again from Webber. Lap forty nine and Hamilton would pit from ninth taking on the harder tyre. Nico would pit from sixth on lap fifty taking on the harder tyre for his run to the flag. Barrichello would pit on lap fifty one.
Second placed Webber was also in as Button re-took the lead. Heidfeld would also pit while Nico was down in eighth. Webber was able to get in front of both Massa and Vettel in this round of pit stops. lap fifty two and Kazuki would pit from ninth. Barrichello was now 8.1 seconds behind Button. Vettel was
pushing Massa looking to pass the Ferrari. Massa was been told by his team to try and conserve fuel.

NakajimaNico and Kazuki were in eighth and thirteenth. Nico was 1.9 seconds behind Heidfeld and unlikely to improve his position before the end of the race. Massa was told that he may have to pit again if he can't save fuel. Kazuki was now lapped by Button in what was another poor result for the Williams driver. Nico was well ahead of ninth placed Hamilton with five laps remaining. Button was leading comfortably from Barrichello with Webber 1.0 seconds behind Rubens. Vettel would pass Massa allowing Massa to conserve fuel to the end and come away with a fifth place finish rather than no points if he had to stop. Three laps to go and the race positions were now fairly static. Button would lap ninth placed Hamilton and would start his final lap.

Button would complete the lap and take victory in the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix. Massa had slowed so much that Alonso was able catch and pass the Ferrari. It was a one-two for Brawn with Webber third followed by Vettel, Alonso, Massa, Heidfeld, and the last point going to Nico.

A single point for the Williams team, given the pace of the FW31 it was the best that could be expected. It was another weekend where the team appeared to again struggle with getting things right. Including running Nico with a heavier fuel load during qualifying which was of no advantage given that Nico ran a two stop strategy along with most of the leaders. Again the Williams team faces another two weeks before the next race and seeing whether they can secure an improved result in Monaco.
