AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg would set the fastest time in the first practice session for the 2009 Turkish GP. Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima would finish in a respectable sixth. It was a dfifficult session with the dirty track conditions making the going difficult. Nico would set his time on his final lap in the session with the usual quesion as to what fuel he was running in everyone's mind.
Turkish GP Friday 1st
Practice
The 2009 Turkish
Grand Prix would get off to a positive start for the AT&T Williams team with
Nico Rosberg finishing fastest in the opening Friday practice session. Nico
would set his time in the closing moments of the session. He was backed up a
team-mate Kazuki Nakajima who would finish sixth. Bridgestone would bring
their hardest tyre selection for this race on a circuit that places
demands on the tyres. It was a difficult
session with the track conditions making the going very difficult.
For most of the session it was Hamilton who was fastest for much of the
session. The session would get off to a slow start with the track conditions
such that it would be over thirty minutes before anyone would come out to
set a time. Hamilton would set the early benchmark time with a 1m33.992. He
would improve with a 1m32.205.
Several drivers including Kazuki would take to the track setting a time of
1m:34.490 to move into second. Kazuki would drop outside the top three but
would move ahead of Trulli to take this spot back. Hamilton would improve
again with a 1m:30.247 as he continued to use the harder tyre. Kazuki was
able to move up to second with a 1m:30.788. Nico would move ahead of his
team-mate
with a 1m:30.719. Nico would join several other drivers leaving the track
when he would run wide at Turn one but was able to continue.
Kazuki would move up to second with a time of 1m:30.313 as the session
approached the halfway mark. Trulli was able to post a quick time going
fastest with a 1m:29.983. But Kazuki was able to again improve his time
lowering it with a 1m:29.908. Second was now Trulli followed by Nico,
Hamilton, and Raikkonen.
With thirty minutes of the session remaining it would be Massa who was
fastest with a 1m:29.812, ahead of Kazuki and Glock. Trulli was now fourth
followed by Button, Raikkonen, and Alonso in seventh. Barrichello was able
to set a new fastest time with a 1m:29.678 but Hamilton was able to move
past him with a 1m:29.597. He would improve on that with a 1m:29.319. Nico
would come back on to the circuit and was able to move from the middle of
the pack to fourth with 1m:29.724, running on the harder tyres. He was able
to move from fourth to third on the following lap, posting a time of
1m:29.698.
The session would be stopped as a result of some matting being lifted at
Turn one. It would resume with fifteen minutes remaining. Kovalainen would
improve to ninth while Kazuki was able to move up from eighth place to third
with 1m:29.448. As the session came to an end Vettel would move up to second
behind Hamilton with 1m:29.337, but was beaten by Jarno Trulli with a
1m:29.271. But it would be Nico who would put in a 1m:28.952 to move ahead
of Hamilton on his final timed lap of the morning. Another encouraging start
for the Williams team as they prepare for the weekend. But there is always
the question as to what fuel Nico was running with when he set his time.
