BMW ahead of schedule

According to BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen BMW is well ahead, six weeks in fact, of their 2003 season preparations than at this time in 2001.

For BMW they have already had the opportunity to put track time on their new P83 V10 engine in recent testing with the BMW WilliamsF1 team. In addition to this testing BMW has a programme aiming at increasing the performance and reliability of the new engine over the coming months.

Dr Theissen said on the BMW Motorsport web site: "With the new engine we’re already six weeks ahead of the schedule compared to our programme in 2001."

In conjunction with the track testing BMW has also a program of dyno testing new developments of the the main specification of engine. Theissen said that BMW has a range of differing engines currently been being tested.

Theissen added: "Honestly speaking, I don’t know by heart how many engines we’ve got running on the test stands."

For 2002 BMW's P82 V10 engine was widely accepted as been the most powerful engine on the grid and a development version revved to 19,000 rpm during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in September.

As for where BMW goes with its new P83 engine Theissen said: "There will be further progress with the P83, but the (rev) curve will go down. I cannot imagine that anyone is going to achieve over 20,000 revs before they are going to decrease again due to the new engine regulations for 2004 (when teams will be forced to run one-engine-per-driver-per-weekend)."
