Sam Michael, Technical Director of the AT&T Williams team, rates Rubens Barrichello as one of the best drivers he has worked with.

Sam Michael & Rubens BarrichelloWilliams got its strategy right amid the pressure of Malaysia's variable conditions wet qualifying session, with Nico Hulkenberg starting fifth and Barrichello seventh but, as Michael explained, the Brazilian's contribution was greater than commonly appreciated.

“If Rubens had got his sector times together he’d have been right up there in Q3 and I think we could have started P2 and P3," he said. "His second timed lap would have been good enough for that but Michael Schumacher had been off the track and Rubens came up behind him in Turn 12 and could do nothing about it. By the time he got onto his third lap the tyres had gone off. But his calls on tyres were all correct and that was very helpful because the guy’s just got so much experience. That helped Nico as well.

“I have to say, it was big input from Rubens. I was panicking going into Q2 with both cars on intermediates – there was only Petrov, Michael, Nico and Rubens on intermediates, the other 13 cars were all on wets, so I was pretty worried about it. Seeing Michael go out on intermediates made me feel a lot better. When Rubens first went out of the pitlane he said ‘damn, it’s very wet,’ then by the time he got to T7 he said ‘we’re definitely on the right tyre,’ so I was more comfortable then.

“It's still early season but Rubens is one of the best drivers I’ve ever worked with. He’s got such a big database and for every two camber change tests that Nico’s done, Rubens has done 100 of them. He just knows what’s important to make the car quick. It’s an amazing thing to not have that for a while and then to have it again.

“We took the decision to go with Rubens this year for those reasons. We thought he’d be good but he’s far exceeded our expectations. And that goes for everyone in the team – Frank, Patrick, Adam (Parr) and myself. The guy is on a really special level. The thing that’s surprised us most is that we think, how’s this guy not been a multiple world champion? He’s better than guys we know who are champions. There’s always a honeymoon stage but so far it’s a perfect partnership, Rubens and Nico.”

Yeah right.

What Sam actually said was: 'He’s better than guys we know who are champions . . .

He just needs to work on his starts'

Why don't you give him a car he can race forward with, not do a Nakajima and go backwards in races otherwise we may not have him for long!

I wonder, if the team turns it around will it be attributed to Rubens' or SM's technical prowess?

At first I thought this was going to be a warm & fuzzy story about Michael Schumacher rating Rubens highly.

If Ruby did ,and that is a BIG DID turn this car and team around, i would like him to take over as TD of williams in the near future.

seriously i think that mabe SM is hoping for rubens to assist him out of a hole. naturally the current situation could well be short lived and williams could turn out to be the team to beat.

i personally don't think that there is any chance of this happening but that is only my opinion based on events to date.

barrichello has an incredible anmount of experience but can he turn the sows ear into a silk purse? unlikely but only time will tell. if the williams team are not regularly in the top six within the next six races it will most likely be 'goodnight irene' and roll on '11.

Stupid Sam and Sir Frank should fired him since 2006 because he dont know how to handle this situation like rubens did. What he's doing since he become TECHNICAL DIRECTOR. Sam statement makes rubens look very genius than him as technical director. how suck williams have this people like him?

Remember Rubens raced for Honda and they just got worse and worse...

I think it is a bit of a shot at Rosberg too.

yeah but Honda's issue was that they were terribly organised and run by committee. Any initiative that involved spending money probably needed signing off by some faceless/clueless suit in Japan- it took Ross Brawn to knock their heads together and restructure the team to get it working properly.

Team structure is a bit beyond Rubens' work mandate.

I am waiting to see how good the partnership is with Rubens. He was a good choice, but you never know until people start working together. I am hoping that the lack of improved performance from the car is down to not wanting to try out big upgrades on fly-away races. I want to see if the development partnership will work. If it id going to show signs of being productive it will have to be by the third race of the European season by the latest.

Williams and proud of it.

To be fair, drivers have no input at all into the design of a car and Kimi became a world champion by eating ice cream.

It's hard to know how much they can achieve realistically by being 'good to work with'.

Honda got worse because they sacked Geoff Willis just before their car started to reel in big points and Button got his first win, they then let some numpty who had no experience designing racing cars design the awful 2007 and 2008 cars. Not even Ross Brawn could do anything about that.

That is really a silly comment, Button was there too, and Ross Brawn and a lot of people that then became World champions, with that kind of comments you can say the same about Piquet in Lotus, Hakkinen in Mclaren and even Alonso in Renault last year...

Hmmmm. Duffer is the master of controversy, but his second point may be a reasonable assumption.

The article we are discussing, as posted, is a cut down version of the full interview. In its original form, Sam claims Rubens is the best person he has worked with since Damon Hill and Heinz Harald Frentzen.

Now, that might be a shot at recent drivers . . . and Sam just might also seek to excuse his own lack of success since . . hmmmm . . . a very long time ago.

It's funny how this transcript has been edited to erase all mention of HHF and Damon.

I am talking about the test test here. We can expect to see a significant performance increase if the problems with the car that were identified are to be corrected.

Williams and proud of it.
